  • Patent number: 4930872
Abstract: A hand-held device enables repeatable computerized imaging and analysis of a surface feature by combining the functions of alignment, illumination and imaging in a unitary device. The probe consists of a physical standoff having one end contacting the surface surrounding the area to be imaged. The imaging device, in the form of a lens and a charge coupled device (CCD), is mounted on the standoff at a distance from the surface area fixed by the standoff. The imaging device has its focal plane at or near the surface area to be imaged as controlled by the physical dimensions of the physical standoff. The imaging device is constructed having a depth of focus corresponding to the depth of the feature of interest on the surface area to be imaged. The illumination, in the form of a ring light disposed about the imaging device, focuses light at the focal plane of the imaging device.
