  • Patent number: 4645811
Abstract: A material adapted to be used as a contact lens is made from a solid copolymer. The copolymer is made from an alkyl acrylate ester, an organosiloxane ester and a proteinaceous inhibiting wetting mixture of N-(1,1-dimethyl-3-oxobutyl)acrylamide and one or more acids selected from the group consisting of acrylic and methacrylic acid.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 2, 1984

    Assignee: Oculus Contact Lens Company
Inventors: Joseph J. Falcetta, Wilhelm F. Kunzler
  • Patent number: 4640965
Abstract: Hydrogel compositions characterized by a copolymer composition which includes a hydroxyfluoroalkylstyrene as a comonomer. The preferred comonomer compound is p-(2-hydroxyhexafluoroisopropyl)-styrene [HFIS].
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 7, 1986
Date of Patent: February 3, 1987
    Assignee: Alcon Laboratories, Inc.
Inventors: Joseph J. Falcetta, Joonsup Park
  • Patent number: 4640941
Abstract: Hydrogel polymeric material, suitable for preparing optical devices such as contact lenses. The material is of improved oxygen permeability and mechanical properties in comparison with conventional hydrogels. It comprises, in addition to the hydrogel material, from about 5% to about 60% by weight of a siloxane comonomer containing both an aromatic ring and vinyl functionality. Its cooperation and combination of performance characteristics with traditional hydrogel forming monomers provides a very useful polymeric material for making lenses of the soft hydrogel type.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 7, 1986
Date of Patent: February 3, 1987
    Assignee: Alcon Laboratories
Inventors: Joonsup Park, Joseph J. Falcetta
  • Patent number: 4633003
Abstract: Novel colorless siloxane monomers containing both an aromatic ring and vinyl functionality are employed as a monomer for preparing copolymers that are ophthalmically useful. The monomer has good oxygen permeability, allows preparation of copolymers that have good machineability, and is easily wettable. Moreover, because of its compatability with other copolymers it can be useful to make a wide variety of types of lenses including hard and soft, and ocular implants as well.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 25, 1985
Date of Patent: December 30, 1986
    Assignee: Alcon Laboratories, Inc.
Inventors: Joseph J. Falcetta, Joonsup Park
  • Patent number: 4276402
Abstract: Monomeric polysiloxanes end-capped with activated unsaturated groups polymerized with acrylic acid and a comonomer comprising a polycyclic ester of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid to form a hydrophilic, water absorbing contact lens is disclosed. These polysiloxane polymer contact lenses are unexpectedly capable upon hydration of retaining from 1 percent to about 99 percent by weight of water, based upon the total weight of the dry, i.e., unhydrated polymer.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 13, 1979
Date of Patent: June 30, 1981
    Assignee: Bausch & Lomb Incorporated

  • Patent number: 4208362
Abstract: A shaped body is manufactured from at least two polymerized materials with one polymerized material being swellable relative to the other polymerized material. The shaped body is formed having sections of the first material, the second material and a substantially random copolymer of the first and second materials as a transition section between the first and second sections.
