  • Patent number: 4825663
Abstract: An auxiliary power system for a truck or other heavy duty vehicle. A secondary engine which is smaller than the vehicle's main engine is used to generate heat and electrical power, and to drive an auxiliary air conditioning system The coolant systems of the two engines are interconnected so that when the main engine is off and the secondary engine is on, waste heat from the secondary engine is transferred by coolant flowing through the water jacket of the secondary engine to the main engine and also to heater cores in the truck's cab and sleeper. An electrical generator driven by the secondary engine provides electrical energy. The auxiliary air conditioning system includes an auxiliary compressor and an auxiliary condenser, and connections for efficiently interconnecting the auxiliary air conditioning system with the truck's primary air conditioning system.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: May 2, 1989
    Assignee: PACCAR Inc.
Inventors: Parmjit S. Nijjar, Joseph J. Neff

  • Patent number: 4294073
Abstract: An integral turbine housing and exhaust collector section (44) is disclosed for use in an internal combustion engine turbocharger wherein the integral housing and collector section (44) is characterized by lighter weight, smaller size and greater efficiency than designs known heretofor. In the preferred embodiment, the turbine housing includes a volute section (46) containing twin 360.degree. volute passages (58, 60) into which a pair of parallel exhaust gas streams (34, 36) are directed by a pair of mirror image legs (48, 50) shaped to receive exhaust gases traveling in opposite direction toward the midsection of the engine (25) from a multi branch exhaust manifold (82, 84). Each leg (48, 50) contains a guide passage (81) having a curved central axis (1.sub.4) characterized by a constant radius of curvature (R.sub.1) at each point along the axis (1.sub.4) to provide the most aerodynamically efficient path of travel for each exhaust gas stream (34, 36).

  • Patent number: 4180839
Abstract: Apparatus are disclosed for reproducing information from an information carrying tape wherein the tape is advanced by the imposition of a first force longitudinally of the tape, and wherein a second force extending into the plane of the tape at an angle to the first force is imposed. A flutter component is detected in information reproduced from the tape, and the second force is varied in response to the detected flutter component in the sense of a flutter reduction. Advantageously, the mentioned first force may be varied in response to a low-frequency flutter component, while the second force may be varied in respone to a high-frequency flutter component. Piezoelectric tape drive capstan, tape guiding and reproduce head actuating or mounting systems are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4015521
Abstract: Apparatus for printing characters on a printout surface comprise a shaft having a longitudinal axis, a plurality of curved segments mounted side by side on the shaft for individual angular movement about the axis, each of the segments having a series of character types on an outer curved surface and a distinct first surface feature, such as a projection or a recess, behind each of the character types in an inner curved surface. The segments are also movable toward and away from the printout surface perpendicularly to the mentioned axis. The apparatus further includes equipment for selectively positioning the character types adjacent the printout surface, including devices for individually moving the segments angularly relative to the mentioned axis and for selectively resetting the segments to a rest position.
