  • Patent number: 5552490
Abstract: The subject invention relates to a technique for synthesizing rubbery copolymers of styrene and isoprene. These rubbery copolymers exhibit an excellent combination of properties for utilization in tire tread rubber compounds. By utilizing these styrene-isoprene rubbers in tire treads, tires having improved wet skid resistance can be built without sacrificing rolling resistance or tread wear characteristics.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 12, 1995
Date of Patent: September 3, 1996
Assignee: The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company
Inventors: David J. Zanzig, Paul H. Sandstrom, Joseph K. Hubbell, Wen-Liang Hsu, Adel F. Halasa, John J. A. Verthe

  • Patent number: 5323829
Abstract: A pneumatic tire with carbon fiber cord reinforcement wherein the carbon fiber cords have a round cross sectional shape and a twist per inch (TPI) of 1.2 to 1.6 turns per inch (TPI) is provided. Preferably, the carbon fiber cords are coated with an RFL or epoxy/RFL adhesive. It is also preferred that carbon fiber cords having an S twist and carbon fiber cords having a Z twist be used in the same reinforcing plies in the tire. Especially preferred is the incorporation of carbon fiber cords in a folded belt.

  • Patent number: 5300577
Abstract: A pneumatic tire with a tread comprising a blend of 3,4-polyisoprene rubber, cis 1,4-polybutadiene rubber, and a terpolymer of styrene/isoprene/butadiene. The triblend of the three basic elastomers when compounded and cured into a polymer network gives a high tan delta at 0.degree. C. associated with good wet traction and a low tan delta at 60.degree. C. which has been associated with low rolling resistance.
