The system includes a memory for storing program instructions, a microprocessor for directing requests for program instructions from the memory means and for responding to instructions stored in the memory for generating command signals, an interface device for interfacing with a standard telephone line, a transceiver for receiving encoded signals in standard form from the line and for decoding the signals and supplying the decoded signals to the microprocessor and also responsive to command signals from the microprocessor, for providing encoded signals in standard form to the interface device for transmission on the telephone line. Abstract: Subscriber access to the television transmissions of a cable TV system or other wired program transmission is governed by switching means in the remotely controlled unit to which the subscriber's receiver is connected, which switching means is enabled or disabled in response to information coded on the power flow which energizes the controlled unit. The power to the controlled unit may be coded at the cable TV power supply in response to a separate modulated RF carrier signal transmitted to all power supply units from the cable television broadcast central station, or other central location. Stated in other words, a program control center generates binary coded instructions including address words which are conveyed in a wired signal transmission system to multiple subscriber stations by encoding in a special way the output of a power supply used to supply energization to portions of the system.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for blocking the reception of a subscription television program while substituting a replacement program at a blocked receiver, provide security against detuning an unauthorized receiver to receive the subscription program. A security carrier signal is provided in a subscription television signal at the frequency of the audio carrier of the lower adjacent channel and is alternately amplitude modulated with bursts from first and second interference frequencies at a third or keying frequency. The television signal also includes an interfering carrier signal intermediate the audio and video carriers in the channel and the interfering carrier is modulated with a substitute television program. When a receiver is properly tuned to the channel, the security carrier has no effect on reception and either the subscription or substitute program is received, depending on whether the receiver is authorized or not.

Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for blocking the reception of a subscription television program signal while substituting for the blocked signal a replacement program signal which is received by the blocked receiver. A single radio frequency signal, serving as an interfering carrier, is provided intermediate the audio and video carriers of the subscription signal and is modulated with a substitute audio and/or video program signal. The frequency of the interfering carrier is selected so that beat frequencies (i.e. sum and difference frequencies with carrier frequencies of the subscription program), which result from the non-linear characteristics of a conventional television receiver, or harmonics of the beat frequencies which are similarly produced, will block reception of the subscription television signal.
