  • Patent number: 5970841
Abstract: A method and apparatus for handling a two-component explosive product which includes a bladder having an internal storage compartment with a nozzle inlet for receiving one component of the explosive material, such as liquid nitromethane. A removable cap is provided for sealing the nozzle inlet so that the bladder may be transported to the site of unexploded ordnance. At the site, a second of the two-component explosive material is added such as amine in either liquid or powder form or a dry sensitizer such as micro-balloons composed of glass or ceramic micro-spheres. These components are mixed together in the bladder. The cap is removed from the nozzle inlet in order to receive the introduction of the second component and then a detonator device is placed into the inlet nozzle. An actuator or energizer for the detonator is remotely located from the site of the unexploded ordnance and may be actuated at the discretion of the operator.

  • Patent number: 4634480
Abstract: A method of combining explosive compositions prepared from commercially available nitric acid and a common industrial solvent is disclosed herein which exhibits exceedingly high blasting strengths. The compositions are relatively more stable than conventional shaped charge explosives such as HMX or RDX and far less expensive. The compositions are transported separately to the blasting site where the compositions are combined in ambient temperature for immediate use.

  • Patent number: 4630540
Abstract: Detonation apparatus constituting a novel detonation amplifier is disclosed herein having a container enclosing a quantity of combined liquid compositions into which a detonation chamber is submerged. A pyrotechnic charge is suspended with the chamber which is surrounded by the liquid explosive composition. Apertures are provided in the wall of the chamber for permitting the liquid composition to enter the chamber. Activation of the pyrotechnic charge detonates the liquid composition within the chamber which, in turn, detonates the bulk quantity of the liquid composition in the container. In another form, the detonation amplifier includes a shaped charge producing a shock wave reflected back from a baffle to detonate the bulk quantity of the liquid composition in the container.
