  • Patent number: 4533482
Abstract: This invention relates to hydrogenated diolefin-lower alkyl acrylate or methacrylate copolymers and the use of these copolymers to improve the viscosity index (VI) of lubricating oils. The preferred copolymer is a fully hydrogenated, high molecular weight copolymer of 1,3-butadiene and methyl methacrylate containing at least about 71 mole percent 1,3-butadiene. A pour point depressant, VI improving polymer additive for lubricating oils is provided by incorporating a higher alkyl methacrylate in the copolymer. Further, a dispersant VI improving copolymer for lubricating oils and a dispersant for hydrocarbon fuels prepared by graft polymerizing a polar, nitrogen-containing graft monomer onto the VI improver or pour point depressant VI improver is also provided.

  • Patent number: 4292185
Abstract: Polymeric additives comprising a diene-modified mono-olefinic backbone polymer functionalized with chlorosulfonyl isocyanate and post-reacted with a nitrogen compound. The additives impart combined detergent, viscosity index improvement and other useful properties to lubricating oils and hydrocarbon motor fuels.

  • Patent number: 4167616
Abstract: Polymerizable monomers are polymerized in a reaction mixture containing as catalysts (A) an oxygen source and (B) an organic boron compound which is soluble in the reaction mixture, the boron compound being (1) a diborane adduct wherein the boron atoms are linked by a hydrocarbyl group having an aliphatic carbon atom bonded to at least one of the boron atoms, or (2) oligomers based on repeating units containing at least two boron atoms linked by hydrocarbyl groups having an aliphatic carbon atom bonded to at least one of the boron atoms. The diborane adducts include the adduct of borane or a dialkylborane and 1,3-butadiene. The oligomers include polymers of diborane/propadiene adducts. The organoboron catalysts provide rapid initiation of polymerization and the polymerization is relatively insensitive to oxygen concentration, thereby permitting polymerization at ambient temperatures.

  • Patent number: 4154958
Abstract: A new class of thermally labile compounds having rust inhibiting properties is disclosed and claimed. The compounds (or formulations thereof) are especially useful as rust inhibitors when used either alone in distillate hydrocarbon fuels or in multi-purpose additive mixtures for distillate hydrocarbon fuels having a major proportion of hydrocarbon fuel distilling within the gasoline distillation range or other oil compositions to provide rust protection in fuel distribution systems which operate at ambient temperature (e.g., pipelines, tank trucks, and storage tanks). Preferred embodiments of the invention are alkylammonium carboxylate salt-ethoxylated alkyl phenol esters of a dicarboxylic acid.

  • Patent number: 4048081
Abstract: A new multipurpose carburetor detergent for addition to gasoline is disclosed and claimed. The novel multipurpose detergent material shows excellent activity as a carburetor detergent, induction system detergent (% deposit reduction), combustion chamber detergency and, in addition, provides effective rust inhibition when used in automotive gasoline fuels at low concentrations. The new product is a polyisobutene phenol/epichlorohydrin/amine adduct. The novel product may also be described as the reaction product of a polyisobutene phenol with epichlorohydrin followed by amination with ethylene diamine.
