  • Patent number: 5028830
Abstract: An axial field flow-through rotor apparatus comprises a structure formed of magnetic strip wound around a hub in such a way that the first and last layers of strip have surfaces that form coaxial cylinders and edges that define the inner and outer perimeters of parallel washer-shaped faces. The distance between the washer-shaped faces corresponds to the width of the magnetic strip. A plurality of equally spaced radial slots are cut into one of these faces to a selected depth corresponding to a portion of the strip width. A spider that is formed of conductive material and has one spoke for each slot is then placed into the cut face. A plurality of equally spaced radial slots are then cut into the other face at locations that correspond to those at which slots were cut into the first face and to a depth that corresponds to the previously uncut strip width. Thereafter, a second spider, formed of a conductive material and having one spoke for each slot, is placed into said other face.

  • Patent number: 4394597
Abstract: In accordance with the teachings of the present invention, a core element is provided for the rotor or stator of an axial field electromagnetic device such as a motor or generator. The core element of the present invention comprises a cylinder of annular cross section having two annular faces, an axial thickness separating the faces and a plurality of radial slots in one of the faces. In accordance with the present invention, the dimensions of the core element and the slots thereof are sized according to a predetermined relationship. As a result, an electromagnetic device utilizing the core elements of the present invention is more energy efficient, cheaper and lighter relative to electromagnetic devices of the prior art.

  • Patent number: 4381600
Abstract: A method for forming a magnetic core around a pre-wound wire coil involves: passing an end of a strip of magnetically permeable metal through the center of the coil and forming it into a loop encircling the wire coil through its center; revolving the loop to wind the strip onto the loop until it has the desired thickness of the magnetic core to be formed; retracting the strip from the coil to reduce its circumference and to draw it tightly around the coil to form the magnetic core; followed by severing the core from the retracted strip. Apparatus for the practice of the method is provided.

  • Patent number: 4110649
Abstract: A variable speed DC motor contained within a housing having bearing openings at each end, an armature disposed in the housing and pivoted in the bearing openings, the improvement being a first cylindrical field shell surrounding the armature and having a pair of oppositely disposed field pole segments mounted the shell and facing the armature. There is a second cylindrical field shell surrounding the armature and also having a pair of oppositely disposed field pole segments mounted facing the armature. The motor also has a gear means coupled to each of the shells for angularly displacing said first and second shells opposite to each other with respect to the neutral axis of the motor.

  • Patent number: 4090131
Abstract: There is disclosed a moving magnet meter of inexpensive construction which has the greater sensitivity, linearity and immunity from extraneous fields of moving coil meters. The rotor consists of a closed magnetic circuit through which a permanent magnet flux flows. The flux intersects the turns of a stationary coil through which the current to be measured flows, part of the closed magnetic circuit rotating within the coil. The strength and area of the permanent magnet flux which intersects the coil is substantially constant throughout an operating angle for the rotor of at least 90.degree.. The return torque for the rotor is derived from a stationary permanent magnet which interacts with the rotor flux and provides a return torque which varies linearly with the rotor angle.
