    Abstract: A method is disclosed for modifying an aluminosilicate-containing inorganic solid having a predetermined ion exchange capacity and containing an extractable silica by contacting, in the absence of added organic nitrogen or organic phosphorous compound and added activating metal oxide, the porous solid with liquid water at a pH of at least 6, at a temperature of up to 370.degree. C. for about 1 to 100 hours, and recovering a crystalline solid having an ion exchange capacity greater than the starting inorganic solid.

    Abstract: An ethanol fermentation process in which an aqueous solution of fermentable sugar is converted by an ethanol-producing microorganism such as a yeast to a dilute aqueous solution of ethanol with the ethanol being present in the solution at a concentration which does not exceed a predetermined maximum level, wherein ethanol present in the solution is selectively sorbed within a crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite so that the non-sorbed ethanol present in the solution does not exceed the predetermined maximum level of concentration therein, and thereafter exposing the ethanol-containing zeolite to ethanol conversion conditions to effect conversion of the ethanol to hydrocarbons.

    Abstract: The ion-exchange capacity and acid catalytic activity of a ZSM-5 type zeolite are increased by treatment of a physical mixture of the zeolite and an inorganic oxide with water in the presence of an alkali metal cation.Specifically, the catalyst is prepared by contacting a mixture of a crystalline zeolite having a silica to alumina ratio above 12 and a Constraint Index between about 1 and about 12, and a solid source of aluminum with liquid water in the presence of an activating amount of an alkali metal cation and under a combination of conditions including a temperature up to about 370.degree. C. for less than about an hour to about 100 hours to induce increased activity to the zeolite.

Examples of zeolites which may be activated include low acidity zeolites such as boron-containing ZSM-5, boron-containing zeolite Beta and high silica ZSM-5. The aluminum phosphate may be in the form of a microporous, crystalline framework material such as AlPO.sub.4 -5.
