Patent number: 6482190Abstract: An improved outlet tube device for a urinary drainage bag is disclosed wherein an outlet valve mechanism is contained with a rigid housing fixed securely to the drainage bag, rather than just being clamped to the outlet tubing, and thus cannot become separated from the bag. The outlet valve can be opened only by positive action on the part of the medical care personnel, thereby assuring that urine will be discharged only in a controlled manner. Further, because the valve mechanism does not require that a substantial length of tubing with a freely movable end be used in conjunction with the outlet port, there is no need to engage the free end of the tubing with a keeper. Thus the possibility of the tubing springing back to its straight configuration and flicking residual urine on the attending medical personnel is eliminated. In one embodiment the outlet tube device comprises a pinchcock-type valve which is fixedly mounted to the bag and which is normally operative to clamp off the outlet tube.Type: GrantFiled: August 15, 2000Date of Patent: November 19, 2002Assignee: C.R. Patent number: 4078565Abstract: A prefilled, readily activated syringe of the disposable type which can be activated in a fast and efficient manner. A vial containing the medicament to be administered is positioned in a syringe barrel and spaced from one point of a double piercing cannula member which is slidably received in the opposing end of the syringe barrel. Resilient finger gripping members engage a groove in the hub of the piercing cannula in one position with the piercing point spaced from the vial stopper. To activate the syringe one merely moves the slidable cannula member in a direction toward the vial wherein the finger gripping members are released from the first annular groove and engage a second annular groove spaced from the first.Type: GrantFiled: October 4, 1976Date of Patent: March 14, 1978Assignee: Abbott LaboratoriesInventor: Joseph Nicholas Genese

Patent number: 4041934Abstract: An arterial blood sampling unit which is preassembled in a unitary device and which contains a sealing and stopper piercing element which is movable in a barrel member under the influence of arterial blood pressure so as to permit blood to be automatically collected in the syringe barrel. Preferably the unit is preloaded with an anticoagulant material so that upon the depression of a plunger member, the blood collecting chamber and the needle will be pretreated with an anticoagulant. After discarding the excess anticoagulant and upon injection of a hypodermic needle into an artery, the vial will automatically fill with blood without manipulation on the part of the operator.Type: GrantFiled: February 2, 1976Date of Patent: August 16, 1977Assignee: Abbott LaboratoriesInventor: Joseph Nicholas Genese

Patent number: 4036232Abstract: An aspiration unit which will afford a uniform suction level for aspirating fluids from body cavities. The unit is composed of a double piston member, a first head of which is in sealing engagement with a syringe barrel and the second head which is oppositely disposed is contained in a telescoping member which is also receivable in the syringe barrel. Upon movement of the telescoping member outwardly from the syringe barrel, a vacuum will be created in the telescoping member as well as in that portion of the barrel member between the first piston member and the nozzle which is closed from atmosphere by means of a valve member. Upon insertion of a flexible tube into a body cavity and opening of the valve member, fluid will be aspirated into the syringe barrel by means of the partial vacuum created in the syringe barrel and in the telescoping member. A clamp means is provided to hold the telescoping member in the vacuum creating condition while the tubular member is inserted into a body cavity.Type: GrantFiled: April 19, 1976Date of Patent: July 19, 1977Assignee: Abbott LaboratoriesInventor: Joseph Nicholas Genese

Patent number: 4014330Abstract: A prefilled, readily activated disposable syringe wherein a fluid medicament is sealed in a syringe barrel by means of a puncturable sealing element. The syringe barrel also accommodates a slidable piercing member which includes a piercing tubular member held out of contact with the puncturable sealing element until it is desired to intermix a second fluid material with the first. The slidable piercing member has a removable cap disposed thereon for sterile thumb contact and engagement means between the slidable member and the sealing element so that the slidable piercing member positively engages and pierces through the puncturable sealing element when it is desired to activate the syringe. A stoppered vial containing the second fluid is also pierced by the piercing tubular member and upon movement of the vial toward the punctured sealing element quick and efficient mixing of the two fluid materials is effected as well as administration of the combined materials.Type: GrantFiled: October 28, 1975Date of Patent: March 29, 1977Assignee: Abbott LaboratoriesInventor: Joseph Nicholas Genese

Patent number: 3991763Abstract: A wound drainage container for withdrawing and collecting body fluids from a patient is equipped with a valved fluid inlet port and with a fluid outlet port having a one-way valve for emptying the container and for preventing the entry of contaminants into the container. A gate movable between a first position and a second position is provided for actuating the inlet valve. When the gate is in the first position it opens the inlet valve and covers the outlet valve which is located adjacent the inlet valve, and when the gate is in the second position it closes the inlet valve and uncovers the outlet valve so that fluid in the container may be emptied therefrom without the danger of the fluid being flushed back into the patient's wound.Type: GrantFiled: April 17, 1975Date of Patent: November 16, 1976Assignee: Arbrook, Inc.Inventor: Joseph Nicholas Genese
