  • Patent number: 6871077
Abstract: A system and method for geolocating a mobile unit from a single base station is described. Communication signals and pilot signal information from a mobile unit are received at a base station with randomly-located antennas. Certain parameters of the signals are detected and a set of real-time, but ambiguous, location measurements is determined. The real-time measurements are compared to reference measurements previously stored in a database, indexed by range and bearing from the base station, to find the best match and thereby the geolocation of the mobile unit. A time history of the mobile unit's position is stored and compared with static information from maps and other geomorphological data to further refine the geolocation of the mobile unit.

  • Patent number: 6845240
Abstract: A system and method for determining the geolocation of autonomous mobile appliances emitting analog waveforms is disclosed. More specifically, the inventive system and method is used to geolocate FM analog signals such as those used in the AMPS cellular radio air standard by using a time difference of arrival (“TDOA”) approach. The inventive system and method uses a novel approach to minimize the amount of data sent between location sensors and the central location processor comprising adaptive signal combining from N channel to a single channel, FM demodulation to reduce bandwidth, Fourier transformation for signal compression, and segmentation of the location sensors into primary and secondary modes to allow for parallel processing to ease the computational burden on the central location processor.

  • Patent number: 5559864
Abstract: A method for providing emergency information using presently existing cellular telephone system technology. Traffic sensors monitor the control and voice channel transmissions of cellular units within a cellular telephone system for emergency conditions. Data from these transmissions is extracted and analyzed for emergencies according to a statistical model and derived vehicle geolocating information to generate emergency information that is transmitted to a central control center. By combining the information from all of the traffic sensors and each individual cell within a cellular telephone system, a picture of the emergency conditions existing along major thoroughfares may be determined.
