Patent number: 11148956Abstract: Disclosed herein are system and methods for producing a high purity ammonium sulfate product as well as either a lower or a high purity calcium carbonate product by reacting flue gas desulfurization (FGD) gypsum feedstock in batch or continuous mode using synthesized ammonium carbonate from ammonia and carbon dioxide gases. The high purity calcium carbonate is obtained by using a precipitation catalyst, filtering out the impurities, then precipitating a high purity calcium carbonate. Alternatively, the lower purity calcium carbonate may be dissolved in acid, impurities filtered out, then a high purity calcium carbonate is precipitated out using a soluble carbonate salt.Type: GrantFiled: January 22, 2020Date of Patent: October 19, 2021Assignee: Elixsys, Inc.Inventors: Lucien Papouchado, Barry E. Scheetz, Joseph Preston

Systems and methods to chemically treat metal-bearing waste streams to recover value-added materials
Patent number: 11066723Abstract: Disclosed herein are system and methods to effectively leach coal ash with hydrochloric acid and separate an insoluble silica product and then selectively precipitate, from the leachate, a number to value-added, strategic, marketable products using a hydroxide reagent. The resulting precipitated products include iron, aluminum, magnesium, calcium, and a mixture of rare earth elements and transition metals. These can be separated as hydroxides or converted to oxides or carbonates. Using hydrochloric acid for leaching and converting the chloride to sodium chloride in the final step results in practically no waste for this process. The silica can be further purified using sodium hydroxide fusion or caustic leach methods and some minor streams from this process are recycled to minimize any waste stream. These systems and methods can be applied to a number of other industrial waste products such as red mud from the aluminum process, slag from steel furnaces, mine tailings, and other metal-bearing waste streams.Type: GrantFiled: January 24, 2020Date of Patent: July 20, 2021Assignee: Elixsys, Inc.Inventors: Lucien Papouchado, Barry E. Patent number: 8581772Abstract: A method, apparatus, and system to remotely acquire information from volumes in a snowpack and to analyze the information are disclosed. Electromagnetic energy is transmitted remotely to a region of interest in a snowpack and data about reflections are processed to determine reflection values for different volumes within the snowpack. The frequency of the transmit signal is modulated and the positions from which energy is transmitted and received are changed to create a two-dimensional synthetic aperture that allows reflections from three-dimensional volumes to be discriminated and resolved. The electromagnetic energy is transmitted to ensure that it arrives at the snowpack at shallow grazing angles to maximize returns from volumes in the snow and to minimize boundary reflections from the ground.Type: GrantFiled: May 31, 2011Date of Patent: November 12, 2013Assignee: Brigham Young UniversityInventors: David G. Long, Stephen Joseph Preston

Publication number: 20120092949Abstract: A system for mixing a fluid in a tank includes a set of mixers and a controller. The set of mixers is disposed proximal to a perimeter of the tank. The set of mixers are operable to pivot. The controller is configured to control the set of mixers to pivot from a first orientation to a second orientation. The controller is configured to control each mixer of the set of mixers to stop pivoting in a first direction in response to each respective mixer achieving a predetermined intermediate orientation and the controller is configured to control the set of mixers to continue pivoting in the first direction in response to all mixers of the set of mixers achieving the predetermined intermediate orientation.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 4, 2011Publication date: April 19, 2012Applicant: SPX CorporationInventors: Michael Joseph Preston, Thomas A. Publication number: 20100197322Abstract: An inband signaling modem communicates digital data over a voice channel of a wireless telecommunications network. An input receives digital data. An encoder converts the digital data into audio tones that synthesize frequency characteristics of human speech. The digital data is also encoded to prevent voice encoding circuitry in the telecommunications network from corrupting the synthesized audio tones representing the digital data. An output then outputs the synthesized audio tones to a voice channel of a digital wireless telecommunications network.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 13, 2010Publication date: August 5, 2010Applicant: Airbiquity IncInventors: Dan A.
