    Abstract: A gaming device including a mechanical display which includes a housing, a symbol display mechanism rotatably connected to the housing, a plurality of independent symbol display members including at least one symbol rotatably connected to the symbol display mechanism and a pivoting symbol indicator connected to the center of the symbol display mechanism. Upon a triggering event in a game, the symbol display mechanism rotates relative to the housing and each of the symbol display members rotate relative to the symbol display mechanism. The pivoting symbol indicator pivots downward towards one of the symbol display members to indicate the symbol on the symbol display member. The mechanical display may be used in a primary game, a secondary game or any suitable type of game.

The front door is pivotally connected to the gaming device using one or more hinges and facilitates access to the interior of the gaming machine. The moveable and/or removable bolster pivotally attaches to the door. In one preferred embodiment, when unlocked, the bolster automatically swings open to a preliminary angle, whereby the operator lifts the bolster to the predefined operating angle. In one alternative embodiment, when unlocked, the bolster automatically swings open to the predefined operating angle.

The gaming machine incorporates both a hopper for coin operated play as well as a printer for cashless play. In accordance with one aspect of the machine, the system can automatically detect when one of the pay out systems is disabled or otherwise unavailable and automatically continue operation with the other pay out method to allow the machine to function in a limited state. The system thus helps the transition for players from coin operated machines to cashless gaming machines, and accommodates users with different cash out preferences. The gaming machine also accepts tickets, allowing users to easily move their credits from one gaming machine to another.
