  • Patent number: 5549788
Abstract: Effluents are minimized from a cellulose pulp mill having a recovery boiler by concentrating liquid effluents from the bleach plant and/or liquid spills from process streams, incinerating the concentrated effluents in the recovery boiler, removing particles present in the flue gases from the recovery boiler to produce an ash including salts containing potassium and chloride, and sulfur compounds, and removing the potassium and chloride from the ash while returning the sulfur containing compounds to the recovery loop, so as to balance the sulfur, chloride and potassium levels in the mill. The sulfur is typically returned directly to a stream of black liquor just before entry into the recovery boiler. Green liquor is produced from the melt, which preferably is treated to remove metals from it prior to caustization (e.g. by sedimentation and/or filtration), and prior to green liquor crystallization to produce sodium hydroxide.

  • Patent number: 5547546
Abstract: A chip bin for wood chips in a continuous digester system includes internal steaming that is controlled in response to both the interior temperature across the level of chips in the bin, and the level of chips in the bin, so as to substantially prevent cool, non-condensible gas-laden chips from accumulating at the top of the chip column in the bin, and to substantially prevent steam blow-through. The temperature probe used in the chip bin has a temperature sensing portion with a length of about ten to twenty feet instead of the conventional five foot length, and extends across the level of the chips to a position about five feet below the level of chips. Control of steam added to the bin is provided utilizing a controller which controls the position of one or more valves in one or more steam conduits, each valve having multiple open positions and a closed position.

  • Patent number: 5547012
Abstract: Kraft pulp of increased strength and bleachability may be produced with decreased consumption of effective alkali, and at a lower H factor, by keeping the dissolved organic material (DOM) concentration low substantially through the entire kraft cook, including by extracting high DOM liquid from at least one part of a continuous digester and replacing it with much lower level DOM liquid. Existing pulp mills having two-vessel hydraulic, one-vessel hydraulic, or other systems may be retrofit to provide for extractions and additions of low DOM dilution liquor (including substantially DOM-free white liquor). Also, commercial size batch digesters (8 tons per day of pulp or more) can be operated with low DOM liquor to produce increased strength pulp. Using dilution with low DOM liquor also results in reduced H factor and effective alkali consumption, and increased bleachability.

  • Patent number: 5547543
Abstract: Apparatus for a pulp and paper mill, and methods of acting on liquid effluents produced in the mill, which minimizes the discharge of polluting gaseous and liquid effluents to the environment. Liquid effluents from the bleach plant are concentrated (e.g. evaporated), incinerated (e.g. gasified), leached, crystallized (e.g. freeze crystallized) then washed, and then fed to the plant chemical recovery loop. White liquor produced from the recovery boiler melt is fully oxidized and used in place of caustic in the bleach plant. Essentially all sulfuric acid, sulfur dioxide, caustic, and chlorine dioxide necessary for the pulp mill is produced from mill liquid effluents and gas waste streams, on site at the pulp mill. Typical bleaching sequences that can be used are DE.sub.op D.sub.n D, or AZE.sub.o PZP.

  • Patent number: 5529190
Abstract: A slurry of recycled cellulose fibers is deinked by introducing the slurry into the first end of a vortex, sparging gas radially inwardly into the slurry to cause gas bubbles to attach to contaminants and ink particles to form an aerated slurry, discharging the aerated slurry from near the second end of the vortex into a separation vessel, effecting separation of a foam of ink laden gas bubbles from the cellulose fiber slurry in the separation vessel, and removing from the separation vessel the foam with associated ink and contaminants in a first stream, and de-inked cellulose fiber slurry in a second stream. The separation vessel is typically a foam separating vessel with separation effected by flotation, and by discharging the foam. The slurry is introduced into the flotation vessel below the liquid level in it. The slurry typically has a consistency of about 0.5-2%, and the gas to slurry volume ratio during sparging may be 0.1-1 to 1.0 (e.g. 0.2-0.7 to 1, or 0.3-0.4 to 1).

  • Patent number: 5518583
Abstract: In minimizing effluents from a cellulose pulp mill, liquid effluents from a bleach plant are concentrated, and then incinerated to produce a residue including sodium, sulfate, and sodium chloride. This residue is distilled with sulfuric acid to produce gaseous hydrogen chloride and remaining residue, the HCl being used in chloride dioxide production for the bleach plant, while the remaining residue is passed to the recovery loop (e.g. recovery boiler). Sulfur containing gases from the non-condensible gas system may be combusted to produce gaseous sulfur dioxide, which is then converted to sulfuric acid, to distill the residue. Where a non-chlorine bleach plant is provided, the liquid effluents may be concentrated in evaporators and then passed directly to the recovery boiler. The liquid streams in the mill are managed by a cascade principle to reserve the cleanest water for only those processes where it is needed while minimizing its use where it is not necessary.

  • Patent number: 5489363
Abstract: Kraft pulp of increased strength (e.g. at least about 15% greater tear strength at a specified tensile for fully refined pulp, and as much as about 27%) is produced by keeping the dissolved organic material (DOM) concentration below about 100 g/l (e.g. <50 g/l) throughout substantially the entire kraft cook. This may be done by extracting liquor containing a level of DOM substantial enough to adversely affect pulp strength, and replacing some or all of the extracted liquor with liquor containing a substantially lower effective DOM level than the extracted liquor, so as to positively affect pulp strength. The replacement liquor may be water, white liquor, pressure heat treated black liquor, washer filtrate, cold blow filtrate, or combinations, or the extracted liquor can be treated to remove or passivate the DOM (e.g. by precipitation, ultrafiltration, or absorption).

  • Patent number: 5411633
Abstract: Medium consistency (e.g. about 6-15%) paper pulp is effectively bleached with ozone in a carrier gas (typically oxygen) by effecting efficient separation of carrier gas from the pulp after reaction with the ozone, and introducing the ozone into the pulp at a pressure of about 10-13 bar. Ozone in oxygen and medium consistency paper pulp are fed to a fluidizing mixer; the intimate uniform mixture produced is then passed upwardly in a reaction vessel until about 99% of the ozone has been consumed, and then separation of gas from the pulp is initiated by moving the pulp mixture into a generally horizontal tube leading to a gas zone in a large diameter retention vessel. A pressurized gas pad is maintained at and above the introduction of the pulp into the retention vessel, while the level of pulp in the retention vessel is maintained below the point of introduction.

  • Patent number: 5380402
Abstract: A pulp mill has zero or minimum liquid discharges. The large amounts of liquid that must be processed to achieve this result are handled utilizing a multiple effect evaporator provided with heat from a steam exhaust of a condensing type steam turbine. Super heated steam from the recovery and bark boilers is fed to the turbine to generate electricity for the production of bleaching chemical and other uses in the mill. Three or four steam exhausts having different composite temperature and pressure values are taken from the turbine and used where most suitable in the pulp mill. For evaporation of bleach plant effluent the steam taken from the turbine preferably has a pressure of about 1-3 psia and a temperature of about 120.degree.-140 .degree. F, and has no significant adverse affect on power generation.

  • Patent number: 5328564
Abstract: Kraft pulp is bleached to a brightness of about 90 CPPA or greater, without the use of chlorinated organic compounds that has commercially acceptable strength properties. During production of the kraft pulp it is subjected to extended delignification, by adding kraft white liquor to a first recirculation loop in the digester, and/or a second, wash, recirculation loop in the digester; or by conventional pulping followed by two oxygen stages, with washing between the stages. The extended delignification pulp is then subjected to ozone bleaching, with an ozone dosage of less than 1.0% (preferably less than about 0.5%). The ozone bleaching sequence may be a (ZE)P(ZE)P sequence.

  • Patent number: 5187956
Abstract: In a pressure diffuser, clogging of the tapered inlet passageway at the bottom of the vessel is minimized by providing a number of lubricating fluid introducing nipples disposed circumferentially around the annular passageway. The nipples introduce lubricating fluid so that it flows upwardly along the inner wall of the vessel. The vessel inner wall and the bottom support for the screen at the passageway are polished and free of projections, so that friction is minimized. The nipples are provided in sets that are staggered so that a nozzle is placed about every 15.degree. around the circumference of the vessel, and a common annular header--mounted on the support legs of the vessel--provides the lubricating fluid. Should screen movement slow as a result of paper pulp properties near the screen bottom support, the flow rate of lubricating liquid can be increased so as to significantly dilute the pulp at the passageway until slow movement of the screen is overcome.

  • Patent number: 5021125
Abstract: A hydraulic accumulator prevents oil with gas entrained in it from exiting the accumulator. The accumulator comprises a completely static structure which provides laminar flow of oil from a gas pad to the accumulator outlet. The laminar flow is preferably provided by a plurality of tubes disposed between the gas pad and the outlet, each tube having a substantially greater length than the largest cross-sectional dimension. The tubes are preferably rigid and circular in cross-section, and the passageways defined between the tubes also have a substantially greater length than the largest cross-sectional dimension. The accumulator can either be a low pressure accumulator or a high pressure accumulator. With a high pressure accumulator it is desirable to provide a float switch or like sensor to ensure that the tubes within a tube bundle are always fully immersed in oil.

  • Patent number: 4547264
Abstract: A method and apparatus for selectively withdrawing liquor from digester cooking screens for controlling the temperature in continuous digesters. First and second pairs of screens, with cooperating headers, are provided, and first and second outlets spaced circumferentially around the digester are associated with each header. Each header provides a circumferential cavity free of dividing members. Within each pair of screens withdrawal is practiced so that each header is rested during each ultimate withdrawal step, and the side from which the liquor is drawn each successive withdrawal step that the same header is used is alternated. In practicing the invention, header blockage caused by deposited debris and scale is minimized and increased uniformity and improved product quality result.
