  • Patent number: 10377221
Abstract: A powertrain includes a drive unit that can be modular and is adaptable to be used as an all-electric drive unit, an input power-split drive unit, or an input and compound power-split drive unit. The drive unit includes a first planetary gear set that has a sun gear member, a ring gear member, and a carrier member all rotatable about a first axis of rotation. The drive unit includes a first electric machine operable as a motor and having a rotor connected to rotate in unison with the sun gear member about the first axis of rotation. A first brake is selectively engageable to ground the ring gear member, a first clutch is operatively connected to the ring gear member, and an output member is connected to rotate in unison with the carrier member about the first axis of rotation. Multiple drive units can be used on a vehicle.

  • Patent number: 10094427
Abstract: A ball cam actuated dog clutch assembly for a motor vehicle transmission includes a clutch sleeve having a plurality of gear teeth positioned at a first end and multiple ball bearings disposed at a second end. A clutch hub having multiple helical grooves is created in an outer facing wall. Each of the helical grooves receives a portion of one of the ball bearings. An actuator member acts to rotate the clutch hub. Rotation of the clutch hub causes axial translation of the clutch sleeve in a selected one of a first direction or an opposite second direction by translation of the ball bearings within the helical grooves.

  • Patent number: 9950607
Abstract: A powertrain includes an output member, and first and second simple planetary gear sets. The planetary gear sets each have a first, a second, and a third member including a sun gear, carrier, and ring gear member. The drive unit includes a single electric machine operable as a motor and having a rotor connected to rotate in unison with and drive the sun gear member of the first planetary gear set. An interconnecting member connects the second member of the first planetary gear set to rotate in unison with the first member of the second planetary gear set. The third member of the first planetary gear set or the second member of the second planetary gear set is continuously grounded to the stationary member or operatively connected to be driven by an engine. The third member of the second planetary gear set is continuously operatively connected to the output member.

  • Patent number: 9574619
Abstract: A pawl grounding clutch with synchronizer assembly attached to a planetary gear set of a drive unit. A cylindrical hub is engaged to the ring gear and the hub co-rotates with the ring gear. A gear is fixed to the hub. A pawl having a pawl tooth rotates between a first position with the pawl tooth spaced away from the gear and a second position having the pawl tooth engaged between successive gear teeth. A synchronizer rotates during pawl rotation and includes a friction surface directly contacting the hub before the pawl tooth engages the gear. A shift member displaces the pawl between the first and second positions. The pawl in the second position engages the ring gear with a case defining a clutch closed position. The pawl in the first position disengages ring gear from the case, defining a clutch open position.

  • Patent number: 8813896
Abstract: A vehicle including a vehicle body is disclosed. A transmission casing includes a plurality of walls extending outwardly to a distal edge. One of the walls defines a first side and another one of the walls defines a second side. A power inverter module is coupled to the transmission casing to define a unit disposed in a first position when the unit is stationary relative to a first end of the vehicle body and a second position when the unit moves toward a second end of the vehicle body. The power inverter module slopes downwardly from the first side toward the second side to define a module angle relative to a longitudinal axis such that the power inverter module defines an angular position. The angular position of the power inverter module minimizes engagement of the power inverter module with a component when the unit is in the second position.
