  • Patent number: 9631550
Abstract: An internal combustion engine enabling asymmetric port timing has an engine mechanism including a crankshaft having a crankpin to which each piston of an opposed pair of pistons is connected and by which the pistons are reciprocatable in a respective one of axially inline cylinders. The mechanism also includes a crosshead having opposite ends on each of which a respective piston is mounted, and a coupling between the crosshead and the crankpin by which the pistons are caused to oscillate circumferentially as the pistons are driven to reciprocate.

  • Patent number: 8307792
Abstract: An internal combustion engine has a mechanism, through which movement of a piston can be transferred to a crankshaft, from a first con rod on which the piston is mounted. The mechanism has an oscillating device mounted on a crankcase of the engine for oscillating on a first axis parallel to the crankshaft axis. The oscillating device is connected to a second con rod connected to the crankshaft for relative rotation on a second axis parallel to the first axis, and also to the first con rod for rotation on a third axis parallel to the first and second axes. The oscillating device is connected to the con rods so that the first axis and the crankshaft axis are on opposite sides of the piston axis, to enable adjustment of piston reciprocation.

  • Publication number: 20100180868
Abstract: A rocking mechanism, through which linear reciprocating movement of a piston in a cylinder of an internal combustion engine can be transferred, from the remote end of a con rod on which the piston is mounted to a crankshaft, includes an oscillating device and a mounting device by which the oscillating device is mountable on a crankcase of the engine for reversible oscillating movement of the oscillating device on a first axis parallel to the crankshaft axis. The oscillating device is adapted for pivotally connecting to the little end of a further con rod having a big end connectable to the crankshaft for relative rotation, between the rocking mechanism and the further con rod, on a second axis offset from and parallel to the first axis.

  • Patent number: 7174863
Abstract: A rocking mechanism through which linear reciprocating movement of a piston of an internal combustion engine can be transferred, from the remote end of a connecting rod on which the piston is mounted, to a crankshaft. The mechanism includes a rocking member; mountings by which the rocking member is mountable in relation to the crankcase for the engine, for reversible rocking movement on a first axis (X1); a link member pivotally connected at one end to the rocking member so as to be pivotable relative to the rocking member on a second axis (X2) between two extreme positions; and a holding device.

  • Patent number: 4727761
Abstract: A wobble plate engine mechanism includes a stabilizer mechanism operating between a wobble plate and a mounting on the engine cylinder block or associated engine case. The stabilizer mechanism has first and second mutually inclined, elongate link means, the first link means having one end connected to the wobble plate by a first pivotal coupling and the second link means having one end connected to the mounting by a second pivotal coupling, spaced axially with respect to the mainshaft from the first coupling, with the link means being connected together at their other ends by a third pivotal coupling. The third coupling is centered on a bisecting plane for the wobble plate, the plane bisecting the angle between the wobble plate and a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the mainshaft.

  • Patent number: 4688439
Abstract: The wobble plate engine mechanism includes a cylinder block and mainshaft; a drive hub obliquely mounted for rotation with the mainshaft; a wobble plate rotatable around the hub; cylinders spaced around the mainshaft; and a piston moveable in each cylinder and couple to arms of the wobble plate. Piston and arm couplings comprises a cross-head reciprocable in a piston bore and a gudgeon pin moveable end-wise in a cross-head bore; the cross-head bore and ends of the pin defining cavities so lubricant access, under some operating conditions, dampens that end-wise movement. Means for shifting the wobble plate axis along the mainshaft includes a drawing member coupled to the mainshaft and rotatable on the block to draw the mainshaft, a rotatable actuator shaft and a drive train between the drawing member and actuator shaft. Means for varying the drive hub angle is pivotally connected to the hub and mainshaft on respective sides of the mainshaft.

  • Patent number: 4433596
Abstract: The invention relates to wabbler plate engine mechanisms. One such mechanism has a wabbler plate rotatably mounted on a wabbler carrier which is in turn inclinably mounted on a crankshaft in a crankcase. The wabbler plate has a plurality of arms which are coupled to pistons slidably mounted in cylinders arranged around the axis of the crankshaft. As the crankshaft rotates, each arm oscillates laterally relative to its respective piston and a stabilizer mechanism comprising ball races on the wabbler plate and a ball carrier on the crankcase, is included to prevent the oscillations from unbalancing the mechanism. This construction is quite satisfactory but is not readily adaptable to provide for variable displacement. Attempts have been made to incorporate this facility, but a successful solution has not yet been found.
