    Abstract: An alert management system and method for use in healthcare clinical decision support. The alert management system includes an alert mode and an escalation mode. The alert mode is capable of receiving a rule payload generated by a rule engine and is further capable of generating an initial alert message. The escalation mode is capable of transmitting the initial alert message to a recipient and is further capable of monitoring for a response. Monitoring for a response includes an alert escalation, which is capable of transmitting a subsequent alert message after the passage of a predetermined time duration. The method of alert management includes receiving a rule payload from a rule engine and generating an initial alert message. The method further includes transmitting the initial alert message to a recipient and monitoring for an acknowledgement from the recipient.
