Also described are derivatives of 1-amino-2-benzoylpyrrole having the general formula ##STR2## where R, X and Y are as defined above, and R.sub.1 is hydrogen, ##STR3##Compounds I and II are useful as analgesic, anxiolytic and/or anticonvulsant agents, and many of Compounds II are useful as intermediates for synthesizing Compounds I.
