Patent number: 8276035Abstract: There is a class of applications that favor expediency of the communications over reliability. Counter-intuitively, the reliability aspect of a protocol may cause sub-optimal performance when considering this special class of applications in some environments. To resolve this performance issue, the exemplary illustrative non-limiting protocol implementation favors timeliness over reliability by allowing for loss of data, thus providing a non-guaranteed, order sensitive level of service. Such features can be combined in the same system and data stream/channel with a guaranteed-reliable protocol to provide a roamable VPN simultaneously providing both guaranteed-reliable and real-time, dynamically adaptable performance.Type: GrantFiled: May 4, 2009Date of Patent: September 25, 2012Assignee: Netmotion Wireless, Inc.Inventors: Joseph T. Savarese, Erik Olson, Michael Snyder, David Thompson, Emil Sturniolo

Patent number: 8078727Abstract: A seamless solution transparently addresses the characteristics of nomadic systems, and enables existing network applications to run reliably in mobile environments. The solution extends the enterprise network, letting network managers provide mobile users with easy access to the same applications as stationary users without sacrificing reliability or centralized management. The solution combines advantages of existing wire-line network standards with emerging mobile standards to create a solution that works with existing network applications. A Mobility Management Server coupled to the mobile network maintains the state of each of any number of Mobile End Systems and handles the complex session management required to maintain persistent connections to the network and to other peer processes. If a Mobile End System becomes unreachable, suspends, or changes network address (e.g.Type: GrantFiled: May 27, 2005Date of Patent: December 13, 2011Assignee: Netmotion Wireless, Inc.Inventors: Aaron D. A Mobility Management Server coupled to the mobile network maintains the state of each of any number of Mobile End Systems and handles the complex session management required to maintain persistent connections to the network and to other peer processes. If a Mobile End System becomes unreachable, suspends, or changes network address (e.g., due to roaming from one network interconnect to another), the Mobility Management Server maintains the connection to the associated peer task—allowing the Mobile End System to maintain a continuous connection even though it may temporarily lose contact with its network medium. Patent number: 7644171Abstract: A method for communicating Internet Protocol data over a network, comprises providing an IPv4 data stream and providing an IPv6 data stream. An encrypted Internet Protocol communications tunnel is established through the network between a roaming mobile device and a further computing device. The IPv4 and IPv6 data streams are combined for encapsulation within and transmission through said encrypted tunnel. Continual secure communications of the encapsulated IPv4 and IPv6 data streams is maintained between said roaming mobile device and the further computing device while the roaming mobile device roams between network access points. The encapsulated, transmitted IPv4 and IPv6 data streams are received from said tunnel, and the received IPv4 and IPv6 data streams are demultiplexed.Type: GrantFiled: October 19, 2005Date of Patent: January 5, 2010Assignee: Netmotion Wireless, Inc.Inventors: Emil A. Sturniolo, Joseph T. Savarese, Erik Olson, Eli Patashnik

Publication number: 20030182431Abstract: Method and apparatus for enabling secure connectivity using standards-based Virtual Private Network (VPN) IPSEC algorithms in a mobile and intermittently connected computing environment enhance the current standards based algorithms by allowing migratory devices to automatically (re)establish security sessions as the mobile end system roams across homogeneous or heterogeneous networks while maintaining network application session. The transitions between and among networks occur seamlessly—shielding networked applications from interruptions in connectivity. The applications and/or users need not be aware of these transitions, although intervention is possible. The method does not require modification to existing network infrastructure and/or modification to networked applications.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 13, 2003Publication date: September 25, 2003Inventors: Emil Sturniolo, Aaron Stavens, Joseph T. Patent number: 5610595Abstract: A method and apparatus for transmitting data in a packet radio communication system having data sources, destinations and intermediate repeaters. According to a packet protocol, a repeat count in the protocol is decremented each time a packet is retransmitted, until the repeat count reaches zero, at which time the packet is discarded. According to another packet protocol, a sequence index is used to prevent duplicate packets from being received by requiring that the sequence number fall within a sequence number window at each device, which is incremented each time a packet is received. The sequence number is also used to cause the retransmission of packets which are lost, at which time the sequence number windows in the devices which are affected are reset to allow transmission of the lost packet.Type: GrantFiled: March 14, 1995Date of Patent: March 11, 1997Assignee: Intermec CorporationInventors: Gary W.
