Abstract: A multimedia computer keyboard is provided having one or more high fidelity, diaphragm-type speakers mounted within the keyboard. Mono or stereophonic wiring to each speaker is achieved using existing keyboard cable extending from the keyboard to a keyboard connector arranged upon a host computer. A terminal at the end of the keyboard cable can plug directly into the keyboard connector, such that the terminal can receive an audio output signal generated from a sound card placed within the computer. Accordingly, audio output can be sent to the computer keyboard as an integrated system in order to achieve multimedia function.

Abstract: A personal computer system is discloses which includes a diagnostic system which uses an input/output controller to perform diagnostic functions. Such a system advantageously allows diagnostic functions to be performed on the computer system including the system processor of the computer system. The diagnostic program may be stored within nonvolatile memory which is coupled to the I/O controller, thus allowing diagnostic functions to be performed without the need for the computer system memory of the computer system.

Abstract: A modular jack for a 10BASE-T standard Ethernet-type local area network connection to a printed circuit board edge includes a body portion, a plug receptacle, a PC board mounting apparatus, and a cavity for receiving a LED to indicate the status of the LAN connection. The LED preferably is embedded in the front face of the body portion of the jack. Alternatively, the body portion of the jack may be molded from a transparent or a translucent resin, and the cavity may be formed in the underside of the body portion, whereby the LED may be mounted on the PC board and the jack inserted on the PC board over the LED, with the body portion of the jack conducting light from the LED to the front face of the jask.

Abstract: A power management control unit and system is provided for selectively controlling ac power to one or more computer peripheral devices. The power management control unit includes a power cord connected to an ac supply and an outlet pin capable of electrically receiving the peripheral device. The management control unit also includes an ac switch electrically coupled between the power cord and the outlet pin, such that the switch can modulate conduction between the power cord and the outlet pin during use. The power management control unit is maintained separate from existing computers and peripherals such that computers and peripheral devices need not be retrofitted or adapted with the control unit. The control unit takes advantage of video control signals available at the computer video output in order to turn off or on ac power to the outlet pin.

Abstract: A method and apparatus which provides bi-directional communication between a video monitor and a computer system unit. This enables the video monitor to inform the system unit of its capabilities without direct user involvement and also enables the system unit to directly control or adjust all the functions of the video monitor. In the preferred embodiment, bi-directional communication between the video monitor and the system unit is provided utilizing a mouse port in the keyboard controller. Multiplexors are coupled between the mouse port and each of the mouse and video monitor to select between data paths and selectively allow communication between the system unit and the video monitor. Monitor control software is included in the system unit which can be used to control or adjust the output of the video monitor.

Abstract: A method and apparatus which provides bi-directional communication between a video monitor and a computer system unit. This enables the video monitor to inform the system unit of its capabilities without user involvement and also enables the system unit to directly control or adjust all the functions of the video monitor. In the preferred embodiment, a monitor/mouse interface provides bi-directional communication between the video monitor and the system unit.
