  • Patent number: 10361441
Abstract: Membrane electrode assembly comprising a first gas diffusion layer having a first microporous layer on a major surface thereof, wherein the first microporous layer has a major surface, wherein the major surface of the first microporous layer has discontinuous areas therein substantially free of microporous material, and wherein at least a portion of the first discontinuous areas has adhesive therein; and methods for making the same. Membrane electrode assemblies described herein are useful, for example, in fuel cells.

  • Publication number: 20180006315
Abstract: An article comprising a first gas distribution layer (100), a first gas dispersion layer (200), or a first electrode layer, having first and second opposed major surfaces and a first adhesive layer having first and second opposed major surfaces, wherein the second major surface (102) of the first gas distribution layer (100), the second major surface (202) of the first gas dispersion layer (200), or the first major surface of the first electrode layer, as applicable, has a central area, wherein the first major surface of the first adhesive layer contacts at least the central area of the second major surface of the first gas distribution layer, the second major surface of the first gas dispersion layer, or the first major surface of the first electrode layer, as applicable, and wherein the first adhesive layer comprises a porous network of first adhesive including a continuous pore network extending between the first and second major surfaces of the first adhesive layer.

  • Publication number: 20110027492
Abstract: The present invention provides a method of making a fuel cell gas diffusion layer comprising the steps of a) providing a carbon fiber construction; b) coating at least the upper surface of the carbon fiber construction with composition which comprises a fluoropolymer; and c) exposing the upper surface to at least one plasma, such as a silane plasma, so as to generate a hydrophilic surface layer having a thickness of no more than 1 micron. The present invention also provides a method additionally comprising the step of partially covering the upper surface with a mask having windows according to a pattern, such that the hydrophilic surface layer is applied according to the pattern. The present invention also provides a method wherein the carbon fiber construction is provided as a roll good and the step of exposing said upper surface to at least one plasma is performed in continuous roll-to-roll fashion.

  • Patent number: 7608334
Abstract: The present invention is a microlayer for use with an electrically conductive porous substrate of a gas diffusion layer. The microlayer includes carbon particles and a polymeric composition of first highly-fluorinated polymers that are non-melt processable and second highly-fluorinated polymers that are melt processable.

  • Patent number: 6221198
Abstract: Environmental stabilizing agents are stored in an adhesive adjoining, directly or indirectly, a film or membrane that requires protection from the environment. Such stabilizing agents include ultra-violet protectors and anti-oxidants. Migration of such environmental stabilizing agents from an adhesive to a film or membrane permits the use of new and different materials for such films and membranes because their method of manufacture no longer needs to accommodate the heat and processing sensitivities of the stabilizing agents.
