  • Publication number: 20240115872
Abstract: An implant device (105) such as an antennae or coil of wire (107) is implanted into or around a group of cancerous cells such as a tumor (120). A magnetic field generator (205) such as a magnet or electromagnet is placed (310) close to the implant device such that the implant device is within a magnetic field (215) generated (315) by the magnetic field generator. The magnetic field is changed (330), by rotating or moving the magnetic field generator, such that an electric field is induced within the implant device and the group of cancerous cells. The electric field has been shown to reduce the size or number of the cancerous cells, to reduce the growth rate of the cancerous cells, and to halt or reduce metastasis. The strength and frequency of the electric field can be changed based on the type of cancerous cells or based on how the cancerous cells respond to the implant device.

  • Publication number: 20240071593
Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed that provide smart alerts to users, e.g., alerts to users about diabetic states that are only provided when it makes sense to do so, e.g., when the system can predict or estimate that the user is not already cognitively aware of their current condition, e.g., particularly where the current condition is a diabetic state warranting attention. In this way, the alert or alarm is personalized and made particularly effective for that user. Such systems and methods still alert the user when action is necessary, e.g., a bolus or temporary basal rate change, or provide a response to a missed bolus or a need for correction, but do not alert when action is unnecessary, e.g., if the user is already estimated or predicted to be cognitively aware of the diabetic state warranting attention, or if corrective action was already taken.

  • Publication number: 20220218242
Abstract: Disclosed herein are methods and apparatus for making a determination whether a blood sample is, or is not, infected with a malaria parasite. The determination is made using a trained machine-learning (ML) algorithm. In some aspects, a microfluidic chip is used for the concentration of red blood cells infected with these parasites from uninfected red blood cells, the staining of the blood sample which differentially stains infected and uninfected red blood cells, and holds the sample of interest for imaging. The microfluidic chip is inserted into an optical subsystem that magnifies the image created from transmitted light microscopy. The magnified image is captured with a camera, and a trained ML algorithm assesses if the sample does or does not contain the parasite. Generally, the ML algorithm is executed on a portable computing device such as a smartphone.

  • Patent number: 10481622
Abstract: Apparatus and methods for providing fluid such as water at a controlled temperature. In some embodiments, hot and cold fluid is provided to a thermostatically controlled mixing valve, which then provides fluid at a mixed temperature to a plumbing system. The thermostat provides a first loop for closed-loop control of fluid exit temperature, and preferably there is a second, electronically controlled closed loop for adjusting the temperature of fluid exiting the valve. In yet other embodiments the electronic control loop is fail-fixed, such that a loss of electrical communication to the actuator results in the actuator maintaining its last position. In yet other embodiments there is a system including a flow sensor and a recirculation pump such that the temperature of the fluid exiting the valve cannot be adjusted if there is insufficient flow, or if the pump is actuated.

  • Patent number: 10082945
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided to determine that an input to the web browser that displays a web page on a mobile computing device is received, and compare a determined property of the received input with at least one reference value that corresponds to the property. An intent to exit the displayed webpage is detected when the determined property of the received input is the same as or exceeds the at least one reference value. A message is displayed on the display of the mobile computing device based on the determination of intent to exit the displayed web page.

  • Patent number: 10002190
Abstract: Medical treatment devices and methods may include a speaker operable to broadcast one or more types of sounds, wherein each type of sound may be associated with a predefined sound signature. An acoustic transducer may be used to generate a sound signal representative of a sound when broadcast by the speaker. The speaker may be commanded to broadcast a sound of the one or more types of sounds, a sound signal generated by the acoustic transducer during a time period when the speaker is expected to broadcast the sound may be monitored, and it may be determined if the speaker was operable to broadcast the sound and whether the sound was audible to a user by comparing the stored sound signal to the sound signature associated with the type of sound commanded to be broadcast.

  • Publication number: 20180125432
Abstract: Differences of electromagnetic (EM) properties between healthy and cancerous tissues allow detection of abnormal conditions occurring in a tissue of an animal, for example, intra-operative cancer detection. By using a time-varying EM field, electrical eddy currents are generated in the tissue sample, and assessed using phase-sensitive detection. In some aspects, a change in phase shift between the voltage in a receiver coil and the voltage in a driver coil provide a direct and immediate indication of differences in EM properties of specimens.
