    Abstract: A method of determining atrial fibrillation includes determining if a patient's pulse beats form an irregular pattern. If so, presence of an irregular pulse is indicated to a patient and, an electrocardiogram is obtained for determining atrial fibrillation. Initially, a pulse is detected at regular time intervals from a first appendage when motionless, using a pulse detector and pulse rhythms from a succession of time intervals, each corresponding to a respective interval of time between successive pulse beats of a sequence of the pulse beats. Then, a second appendage makes contact with an electrically conductive unit, and electrocardiogram signals are detected simultaneously with pulse rhythms while the first appendage is motionless and both appendages are relaxed. The signals are then analyzed to determine whether, in combination, they are indicative of atrial fibrillation.

    Abstract: A device for measuring blood pressure and for indicating the presence of atrial fibrillation, includes an inflatable cuff, a pump, at least one pressure sensor for measuring the pressure inside the cuff, a pressure relief valve for deflating the cuff, and a control unit for controlling the pump and the valve. A calculating unit determines the presence or absence of atrial fibrillation on the basis of pressure variation sensed by the sensor. The calculating unit is adapted to independently determine the presence of atrial fibrillation on the basis of at least one, preferably two sequences, of pulse beats. The control unit is configured to maintain the pressure in a predefined range or to restore the pressure to a predefined range for an additional sequence, and to determine the presence of atrial fibrillation only if the calculating unit determines the presence of atrial fibrillation during a first and/or preceding sequence.

    Abstract: The presence of irregular heartbeat and/or possible atrial fibrillation is determined by analyzing a measured pulse rate pattern or heart rate pattern. The standard deviation and mean of time intervals each corresponding to a respective heartbeat are determined and compared to a threshold value. When quotient formed by dividing the standard deviation by the mean has a value greater than or equal to the threshold value, the shortest one of the time intervals and its succeeding time intervals are determined, and the succeeding time interval is compared to the mean. If the succeeding time interval is less than the mean, then the heartbeat is irregular. Alternatively, if the succeeding time interval is greater than the mean, the shortest time interval and its succeeding time interval are eliminated from the sample values, a new mean and standard deviation are determined, and the quotient of the new standard deviation divided by the new mean are compared to the threshold value.
