  • Patent number: 9908837
Abstract: Polymers, particularly those used in pressure-sensitive adhesives, are prepared from a mixture of structural isomers of a secondary alkyl (meth)acrylate monomer. The mixture is made by dehydrating a biobased C2-C22 alcohol with a first acid catalyst using a continuous process to form a mixture of olefins, and reacting (meth)acrylic acid with at least some of the mixture of olefins in the presence of a second acid catalyst. The adhesives are characterized by exhibiting an overall balance of adhesive and cohesive characteristics, and containing biobased material.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 13, 2014
Date of Patent: March 6, 2018
    Assignee: 3M Innovative Properties Company
Inventors: Joshua L. Colby, Aaron E. Hutt, Terence D. Spawn, Jason D. Clapper, Tabitha A. Clem
  • Patent number: 9604902
Abstract: A method of making 2-octyl acrylate comprising reacting 2-octanol with acrylic acid in the presence of an acid catalyst and added water is described. The 2-octanol may be derived from renewable resources, such as castor oil. The method is efficient and provides selectivity for 2-octyl acrylate.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: March 28, 2017
    Assignee: 3M Innovative Properties Company
Inventors: Joshua L. Colby, Tabitha A. Clem, Terence D. Spawn, Aaron E. Hutt, Wade T. Teply
  • Patent number: 9533935
Abstract: (Meth)acrylates are prepared in a single-step method from a mixture of (meth)acrylic acid and at least one biobased oil and/or its derivative(s), including at least one unsaturation. The (meth)acrylates are made by directly adding the (meth)acrylic acid to the biobased oil by reacting in the presence of an acid catalyst, including an inorganic or organic acid having at least one oxygen atom present thereon and which possesses at least one acid functionality having an ionization constant in water which is not greater than 3.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 1, 2014
Date of Patent: January 3, 2017
    Assignee: 3M Innovative Properties Company
Inventors: Joshua L. Colby, Lianzhou Chen, Kwame Owusu-Adom, Aaron E. Hutt

  • Patent number: 8790546
Abstract: A method comprising contacting a carbon and hydrogen-containing solid fuel and a metal-based catalyst in the presence of oxygen to produce hydrogen gas and carbon monoxide gas, wherein the contacting occurs at a temperature sufficiently high to prevent char formation in an amount capable of stopping production of the hydrogen gas and the carbon monoxide gas is provided. In one embodiment, the metal-based catalyst comprises a rhodium-cerium catalyst. Embodiments further include a system for producing syngas. The systems and methods described herein provide shorter residence time and high selectivity for hydrogen and carbon monoxide.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 5, 2008
Date of Patent: July 29, 2014
Assignee: Regents of the University of Minnesota
