  • Patent number: 8827889
Abstract: A ventricular assist device (VAD) system includes one or more external subsystems including an amplifier energizing a drive loop with alternating current, and a Tx resonator inductively coupled to the drive loop. An implanted subsystem includes a VAD, an Rx resonator that forms a magnetically coupled resonator with the Tx resonator, and a load loop for providing power to the VAD that is inductively coupled to the Rx resonator. A sensor monitors the drive loop and a controller uses the sensor data to adjust a system parameter to optimize energy transfer performance. Distributing a plurality of the external subsystems throughout a defined space provides a patient with freedom of movement within the defined space.

  • Publication number: 20140103734
Abstract: In accordance with various aspects of the disclosure, devices and methods are disclosed that include measuring, at a transmitter, a reflected power level corresponding to a specific transmit power level, and setting the transmit power to an operational level. At the transmitter, a new operational level of the transmit power may be determined, for example, by selecting at least one trial transmit power level, and based on reflected power levels measured corresponding to the operational level and the at least one trial level of the transmit power, either maintaining the operational level as the new operational level, or determining the at least one trial level as the new operational level. The operational transmit power level may correspond to a lowest reflected power level, or a highest rate of change of the reflected power level with respect to the transmit power level.

  • Publication number: 20140090684
Abstract: Techniques are provided for enhancing electrical properties of semiconductor structures. At a semiconductor structure, a heterojunction interface is provided between two dissimilar materials such that a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) region is present in the vicinity of the heterojunction. Energy is added to the semiconductor structure such that electrons that are present in the 2DEG region are promoted from below the Fermi level to energy states sufficiently high that the electrons can escape the structure. Electrons are emitted from the semiconductor structure in response to adding the energy such that electrons escape the surface of the semiconductor structure.

  • Patent number: 8643475
Abstract: An approach for defending radio frequency identification (RFID) tags and other contactless cards against ghost-and-leech (a.k.a. proxying, relay, or man-in-the-middle) attacks incorporates gesture recognition techniques directly implemented with the RFID tags or contactless cards. These tags or cards will only engage in wireless communications when they internally detect “secret handshakes.” A secret handshake recognition system is implemented on a passive WISP RFID tag having a built-in accelerometer. This approach is backward compatible with existing deployments of RFID tag and contactless card readers and is also designed to minimize the changes to the existing usage model of certain classes of RFID and contactless cards, such as access cards that are kept in a wallet or purse, by enabling execution of secret handshakes without removing the card. This novel approach can also improve the security and privacy properties in other uses of RFID tags, e.g., contactless payment cards.

  • Patent number: 8502650
Abstract: A radio frequency identification (RFID) tag may have a non-responsive mode, triggered by a command from an RFID reader, that temporarily prevents the RFID tag from responding to a query from any RFID reader for a period of time. In some embodiments this non-responsive mode may automatically end after a certain period of time without further action by the RFID reader. In other embodiments this non-responsive mode may end when directed to by another command addressed specifically to the RFID tag.

  • Patent number: 7825776
Abstract: Various embodiments of the invention may use a radio frequency identification (RFID) tag with a writable non-volatile storage element to receive and store configuration parameters for a device connected to the RFID tag, even if the device itself is powered off. Upon power-up and startup of the device, the device may read the configuration parameters from the RFID tag and install them for its subsequent operation. Some embodiments may work in the opposite direction, by allowing the powered device to write its configuration data into the RFID tag's storage element, whose contents may subsequently be transmitted by the RFID tag to an RFID reader, even if the device is unpowered at the time of transmission.
