Publication number: 20150297872Abstract: A medical apparatus includes a catheter having an inflatable balloon at its distal end. The balloon defines at least two spaced larger diameter areas defining a valley therebetween and is adapted to be inserted in a non-inflated condition into a cavity of the human body such as the rectum, and when inflated, is adapted to cradle an organ such as the prostate located in a different body cavity. The balloon is symmetric about an axis defined by the catheter so that positioning issues are limited to axial positioning rather than rotational positioning. Because of the valley in the balloon, when the balloon is inflated, only a limited portion of the rectum is necessarily pushed into contact with the prostate, and thus, the radiation toxicity to the rectum is limited. Methods utilizing the medical apparatus are disclosed.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 25, 2013Publication date: October 22, 2015Applicant: EDGE MEDICAL, LLCInventors: Colin M. Carpenter, Gary A. Lamoureux, Juan-Carlos Diaz, Scott L. Jahrmarkt

Publication number: 20140214003Abstract: A system for treating a blood clot includes a microcatheter extending through an optional aspiration catheter, and a guidewire subassembly extending through and beyond the microcatheter, the guidewire assembly having a guidewire, an element coupled to and extending around a portion of the guidewire, and a balloon coupled to and extending around the element. The balloon includes or is coupled to a proximal seal in contact with the inner surface of the microcatheter and has at least one radially arranged pore. Infusate flows through the microcatheter into the element and between the element and the guidewire, and out and into the balloon to pressurize the balloon. The infusate escapes the balloon through the pores.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 14, 2011Publication date: July 31, 2014Inventors: Yi Yang, Scott L. Jahrmarkt, Michele Migliuolo, Juan Carlos Diaz

Publication number: 20090098500Abstract: An orthodontic apparatus of the type which comprises a dental cover or ferule, characterized in that, in addition to the dental cover, it comprises an elongate element made of flexible material, fixed by one of its ends to the cover, another end of it being free.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 13, 2007Publication date: April 16, 2009Inventor: Juan Carlos Diaz Rendon

Patent number: 7163552Abstract: A hydraulic stent and stent graft delivery system utilizing at least two different structural materials to effectuate the easy retention and release of the stent and stent graft, while maintaining structural and sealing integrity for a pressurizable fluid chamber. An anti kinking spacer is disclosed which prevents buckling/kinking of the otherwise unsupported sheath containment section when the catheter assembly is bent such as for insertion a movement to the delivery site. A configuration according to the invention provides a flexible small or dual diameter delivery system that uses fluid pressure within the catheter to retract the stent/stent graft containment sheath and allow the delivery and deployment of the stent/stent graft.Type: GrantFiled: October 15, 2001Date of Patent: January 16, 2007Assignee: Medtronic Vascular, Inc.Inventor: Juan-Carlos Diaz

Publication number: 20030199914Abstract: A coaxial balloon catheter (50) includes an elongated inner tube (14), an elongated outer tube (16) residing on the exterior of the elongated inner tube, and a balloon (20) having a distal end (22) attached to a first portion of the elongated outer tube and having a proximal end (21) attached to a second portion of the elongated outer tube. This arrangement prevents the balloon from telescopingly buckling when being pushed across a narrow passage.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 23, 2002Publication date: October 23, 2003Inventor: Juan-Carlos Diaz

Patent number: 5693021Abstract: An automatic catheter exchange syringe has a biasing means which drives the syringe in a fluid expelling stroke at a single touch. The syringe includes a barrel portion with a plunger slidably disposed therein. The biasing means applies a driving force to the plunger to drive the plunger in a fluid expelling stroke at a predetermined rate. The biasing means may include compression or tension springs or a bifurcated compression spring assembly.Type: GrantFiled: July 2, 1996Date of Patent: December 2, 1997Assignee: Cordis CorporationInventors: Juan Carlos Diaz, Phillip G. Reed

Patent number: 5338301Abstract: An extendable balloon-on-a-wire catheter is provided which includes a telescoping exchange core wire mounted along the inside lumen of the longitudinal tube of the balloon-on-a-wire assembly. In the preferred embodiment, the exchange core wire is mounted within a hypodermic tube secured to the core wire of the balloon-on-a-wire assembly. A multiple component system includes this balloon-on-a-wire assembly together with an over-the-wire catheter which slidably passes over the elongated body of the balloon-on-a-wire assembly. Preferably, the relative sizing of these components of the system is such that the over-the-wire catheter does not pass over the balloon of the balloon-on-a-wire assembly. In a treatment procedure, the balloon-on-a-wire assembly achieves dilation of a lesion or a stenosis, after which it is moved somewhat distally to clear the stenosis. When the over-the-wire catheter is used, it is slidably moved over the balloon-on-a-wire assembly until its treatment location reaches the stenosis.Type: GrantFiled: August 26, 1993Date of Patent: August 16, 1994Assignee: Cordis CorporationInventor: Juan-Carlos Diaz
