    Abstract: A method and core network node for establishing a connection between a first access node and a second access node. The first access node sends to a first core network node, a connection establishment request that includes a set of framing protocol parameters for the framing of information to be sent over an interface between the first access node and the first core network node. The first core network node stores the parameter set and initializes a connection to a further core network node according to the framing protocol. If the further core network node is not connectable to the second access node, connections are successively made to additional core network nodes until reaching a final core network node connectable to the second access node. The final core network node initializes the connection to the second access node, which stores the parameter set. The connection is then established between the first access node and the second access node utilizing the parameter set.

    Abstract: A method of establishing a connection between a first access node and a second access node via a core network having a first core network node, further core network nodes, and a final core network node. The first access node sends an access request to the first core network node, which stores a set of framing information parameters received in the access request. The first core network node initializes the connection to a further core network node and sends the parameter set together with an indication that transparent transmission is to be utilized after connection establishment. The initialization of the connection and storing of the parameter set and the indication is performed stepwise in further core network nodes until the final core network node is reached. The final core network node initializes the connection to the second access node, which stores the parameter set and the indication.

The invention is suitable for use in the transmission of voice information to and from mobile terminals in third-generation mobile access networks across an ATM core network.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a system and method of communicating operating capabilities in a telecommunication network or networks. The present invention stems from the realisation that mobile telecommunication network resources can be utilised with greater efficiency by maintaining mobile station attributes or operating capabilities at a network node associated with the mobile station. Preferably, the network node is a Visitor Location Register VLR. Additionally, the network node may be a Home Location Register HLR, a Mobile Switching Centre MSC or a Gateway Mobile Switching Centre GMSC. In particular, the invention may provide the creation of a list of operating capabilities at a network node upstream from the mobile station. Having done this, a comparison of this list with another list received from a remote telecommunication element to negotiate operating capabilities at a call set up is achieved without involving communication resources between the mobile station and the network node.

    Abstract: A gateway location register (GLR) can restore data by sending a reset message to all of the visitor location registers (VLR) associated with the GLR. Alternatively, the data in the GLR can be restored when a request for a roaming number is sent to the GLR from a home location register (HLR). In any case the location information is restored from the VLR and the subscriber profile from the HLR. If the GLR has a backup memory, the GLR can forward a request for a roaming number to a VLR which is indicated by the backup memory as serving the mobile subscriber associated with the roaming number request received from the HLR. If the information contained in the backup memory is incorrect, the GLR can send a request to restore data to all VLRs associated with the GLR. Further, the GLR, upon receipt of a roaming number request for a subscriber whose serving VLR is unknown, the GLR can send an error indication to the HLR and wait for a location update from a serving VLR.

    Abstract: In a method for the establishment of a connection between a first node (RNC1) and a second node (RNC2), both are connectable to a core network which comprises interconnected core network nodes (CN1, CN2). The first node (RNC1) signals a call request to a first core network node (CN1). If the first node is an access node, it sends an initialization according to a framing protocol, wherein a set of parameters for the framing of information sent over the interface between the first access node (RNC1) and the first core network node (CN1). If the first node is no access node, a first control server (MSC1) defines said set of parameters. The set of parameters is transmitted to the first core network node (CN1) and the first core network node (CN1) stores the parameter set. The first core network node (CN1) initializes the connection (Co) to a further core network node according to said protocol and the further core network node stores the parameter set.

Reconfiguration of the network diversity legs is accomplished by releasing the transport level connections which support the network diversity legs prior to CN-RNC interface streamlining, and establishing new transport level connections to support the reconfigured, network diversity legs subsequent to CN-RNC interface streamlining. To establish new transport level connections, the serving radio network controller dispatches binding information to each of the destination nodes associated with the network diversity legs.

If the message is to be transmitted over an NNI-SAAL signalling link, the message is transferred to an NNI-SAAL part of the originating signalling point. If the message is not to be transmitted over an NNI-SAAL signalling link, the message is transferred to an MTP2 part of the originating point.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for home location register fault recovery in a system which uses a gateway location register to reduce signaling between visitor location registers and home location registers. When a home location register is recovering from a fault, the home location register sends a reset message to the gateway location registers which are serving mobile subscribers associated with the home location register. The gateway location register sends a reset message to visitor location registers which are serving mobile subscribers associated with the home location register. The gateway location register can determine which mobile subscribers are associated with the home location register by comparing mobile subscriber identification information stored in the gateway location register with information contained in the reset message from the home location register.
