  • Publication number: 20060076814
Abstract: An adapter assembly for releasably attaching a backrest to a frame member, such as a back cane, of a personal mobility device, such as a wheelchair, includes a clamp that can be releasably clamped on the back cane, and a bracket that can be releasably engaged with the backrest, the bracket having a plurality of openings. A plurality of fasteners extend from the clamp through the openings in the bracket. The fasteners have a first condition securing the bracket from movement relative to the clamp and having a second condition enabling adjustment of both the front to back position and the angular position of the backrest relative to the back cane.

  • Patent number: 6659563
Abstract: The invention provides a back support assembly mounted to the upright posts or canes of a wheelchair. The back support assembly can be adjusted independently with respect to a number of modes of adjustment including seat depth and width, the back height above the seat, and the angle of incline with respect to a plane defined by the wheel chair canes to which the back support is mounted. The back support assembly has a back support that is mounted at four points to cane clamps on each of the canes. A quick release mechanism is provided by a locking pawl on a mounting arm which permits single-handed release and removal of the back support from the mounting hardware while retaining the desired adjustment when the back support is remounted on the wheelchair. The back support assembly is frameless, and eliminates the additional weight that a support frame or carriage would add.

  • Publication number: 20030052525
Abstract: A wheelchair back assembly is provided which has a back plate held in position relative to upright wheelchair cane members by opposed independent mounting assemblies. The mounting assemblies include a support bar which carries a bracket attached to said back support plate. The assemblies further include universal cane clamp members hingedly attached to a pivot mechanism which allows for independent bi-lateral adjustment in a direction transverse to the longitudinal axis of the seat of the wheelchair. The clamping member further includes a through bore, which seated on the spindle of a compression latch secured to the upright canes of a wheelchair. A pivotable lever acts as a latch member as it compresses elastomeric O-rings in order to latch the hinge in position relative to the spindle member and to provide for a resilient attachment. The lever also has a locking position to retain the lever in its latched position.

  • Publication number: 20030019040
Abstract: The invention relates generally to a seating system and more particularly to seat cushion assemblies having a rearward depression and cushioning insert tailored to fit under the skeletal structure of the user. In particular, the assembly preferably includes an inflatable air insert which is made of a series of pleated air cells where the insert generally has the same outline as the depression. The insert can be inflated during use using a one-handed pump.
