  • Patent number: 4754062
Abstract: A process for the manufacture of polycarboxylic acids is disclosed. In this novel process, iron is used to improve the selectivity of cobalt-manganese-bromine or zirconium-cobalt-manganese-bromine oxidation system. Polycarboxylic acids such as pseudocumene are converted to trimellitic acid which is used to manufacture plasticizers and polyamide-imide polymers used as molding compounds for replacement of metals.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 23, 1987
Date of Patent: June 28, 1988
    Assignee: Amoco Corporation
Inventors: Wayne P. Schammel, Juergen K. Holzhauer
  • Patent number: 4358600
Abstract: A novel process for obtaining maleic anhydride having age molten and Hazen color below 125 after 20 hours at 140.degree. C., said process comprising polymerizing at a temperature of about 53.degree. to 90.degree. C. in the presence of metal chloride catalyst, color bodies present in crude maleic anhydride prior to fractionating the crude maleic anhydride and distilling off the purified maleic anhydride.

Date of Patent: November 9, 1982
    Assignee: Standard Oil Company (Indiana)
Inventors: George E. Kuhlmann, Juergen K. Holzhauer
  • Patent number: 4342699
Abstract: Process for production of maleic anhydride comprising contacting n-butane-rich feed consisting essentially of n-butane, molecular oxygen and ballast gas with oxidation catalyst in a heat transfer medium-cooled, tubular reaction zone in which catalyst is graded in terms of reactivity such that reactivity increases to compensate for decreased reactant concentrations; removing effluent from the reaction zone; recovering maleic anhydride from the effluent; and recycling a major portion of the remaining effluent to the reaction zone.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 23, 1981
Date of Patent: August 3, 1982
    Assignee: Standard Oil Company (Indiana)
Inventors: David A. Palmer, Juergen K. Holzhauer
