  • Publication number: 20040264408
Abstract: In a DVB-T network, a single channel is shared between transmitters associated with adjacent cells on a time-division basis. Timing allocation information signals are received at each transmitter, where it is determined therefrom and from a common time reference, such as a GPS receiver or atomic clock, when transmission is and is not allowed. Each of the transmitters then transmits on the channel at different times. The channel may carry Internet Protocol Data Cast Services. The timing allocation may be varied so that transmitters have unequal shares. The allocation may be dynamically controllable depending on demand. Using the invention, a saving of frequency spectrum is obtained without requiring channel rasterisation.

  • Publication number: 20040255007
Abstract: The present invention provides a method of accessing data on a network from a user terminal having a local store and wherein the network is accessed via a service provider, comprising: requesting data; determining whether the requested data is available from the local store and if the data is not available from the local store requesting the requested data from the service provider; and receiving, at the local store, a selection of data from the service provider.

  • Publication number: 20040242203
Abstract: An apparatus and a method for providing user a wireless terminal operating within a wireless communication network an access to a resource storing content in a network of computing systems. A user message is transferred, the message including an identifier indicating the resource in the network of computing systems from the wireless terminal over the wireless communication network to a broadcast server having an access to the network. Communicating with the network of computing systems for retrieving the content indicated in the message. The content is broadcast over a broadcast network to the wireless terminal. The content, which is received at the wireless terminal, is presented at the terminal if the data packets of the content are substantially received at the wireless terminal.

  • Publication number: 20020069406
Abstract: A content delivery service is described for delivering content over a broadband digital broadcast network (7). A controller (27) allows the delivery of content to be made in accordance with activity in a public land mobile network 1. The delivery of content may therefore be effectively scheduled and n appropriate revenue level.

  • Publication number: 20020059630
Abstract: A digital broadcast network (1) operating in a hierarchical mode is described. The network (1) includes means (35) for classifying the data types making up the content to be broadcast. In accordance with the classification, the network (1) transmits the data types in an appropriate mode. In addition, there is described a method of defining a set of profiles in accordance with which content of a particular data type is assigned to a particular mode for transmission.

  • Publication number: 20020038459
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and apparatus for transmitting through a single gateway terminal (100) the services required by a plurality of separate multimedia terminals (106). The gateway terminal receives the transmissions (103) coming from several different sources, descrambles and deinterleaves them, if necessary, and re-transmits at an ISM frequency the services required by the multimedia terminals. The service transmitted may be sound, pictures, video, data or system monitoring information. In addition, there is a two-way wireless link from an individual multimedia terminal to the gateway terminal, by means of which link an individual terminal can control the services included by the gateway terminal in its transmission (108).

  • Publication number: 20020025826
Abstract: A broadband digital broadcast 1 network is described in which the cellular topology is dynamically configurable to maintain spectral efficiency. The reconfiguration of the topology occurs in response to changes in the demand for content. Thus, a single cell could be defined to cover an area in which the same content is being delivered to a substantial number of users. Conversely, a large number of cells could be defined to cover an area in which a substantial number of users are each having different content delivered to them.

  • Publication number: 20020023264
Abstract: A broadcast network 1 is described in which to improve network efficiency and quality of service, a particular transmitter 11a within the network 1 is selected to transmit content to a particular, preferably mobile terminal 3. The selection of the transmitter 11a is carried out by reference to information available in a second network 27, the user of the terminal 3 having a further terminal 12 connected to the second network 27 and either integrated with or in close proximity to their mobile terminal 3.
