  • Patent number: 8696844
Abstract: A method is provided of adhesively bonding an elastomeric member to a glass substrate in such a way as to accelerate the building of the strength of such bond and to a vehicle glazing having such an elastomeric member bonded to the glass substrate. This accelerated bonding process is accomplished by mixing a nucleophilic and/or electrophilic catalyst with a beneficial amount of an adhesion promoting primer applying such mixture to a peripheral portion of the glass substrate and exposing same to ambient air. By accelerating the building of the subject bond strength, the rate of “creep” is significantly reduced.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 21, 2010
Date of Patent: April 15, 2014
    Assignee: Pilkington Group Limited
    Inventor: Julia B. MacLachlan
  • Patent number: 8545647
Abstract: The present application describes and claims an item of hardware suitable for bonding to a substrate such as a vehicle glazing. The item of hardware of the invention helps to ensure that the adhesive applied is effectively contained and utilized for its intended purpose. A preferred type of adhesive is also described and claimed.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 9, 2010
Date of Patent: October 1, 2013
    Assignee: Pilkington Group Limited
Inventors: Charles E. Ash, Julia B. MacLachlan, Scott W. Chambers
  • Patent number: 8516749
Abstract: A encapsulated window assembly may be fixed or movable upon installation into an opening in a vehicle body, particularly a vehicle roof. In order to keep air, water and/or dirt from entering the passenger compartment of the vehicle, an integral seal is molded onto a dielectric substrate material. The seal, upon installation of the assembly into the vehicle body opening, effectively closes the gap between the edge of the window assembly and the sheet metal surrounding the body opening, without the need for a post-applied seal, for example, a preformed bulb seal.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 4, 2009
Date of Patent: August 27, 2013
    Assignee: Pilkington Group Limited
Inventors: Charles E. Ash, Scott W. Chambers, Julia B. MacLachlan, Charles Sitterlet

  • Publication number: 20080319133
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of adhering an elastomeric member formed of a thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) material, to a glass sheet, in particular, a blend of a styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene (SEBS) copolymer and a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) material utilizing one or more of an isocyanate-based primer and a silane-based primer.

  • Patent number: 6180246
Abstract: An improved plasticized polyvinyl chloride interlayer for laminated safety glass, and an improved method of manufacturing a laminated safety glass including such plasticized polyvinyl chloride containing film is disclosed. An improved functional silane adhesion promoter is utilized in such a manner so as to impact energy dissipation is maximized while structural integrity is maintained. The plasticized polyvinyl chloride interlayer is formulated so as to provide improved long term heat stability at service use temperatures.
