  • Publication number: 20140352669
Abstract: A method and system for providing a suitable engine torque response during a transient condition is presented. In one example, when a desired inlet manifold pressure is greater than a throttle inlet pressure of a first throttle, a second throttle positioned upstream from the first throttle is opened to increase the throttle inlet pressure. The method may provide an appropriate torque response while minimizing impact on fuel economy.

  • Publication number: 20140316675
Abstract: A method to avoid over-dilution of an intake-air charge of an engine includes, during a first condition, applying at least some feedback control to the opening and closure of a valve that adjustably admits exhaust to the intake-air charge. During a second condition predictive of compressor surge, no feedback control is applied to the opening or the closure of the valve. Rather, feedforward control is applied to the closure of the valve so that stability in the engine is maintained even during surge conditions.

  • Publication number: 20140260241
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for improving boost response. A continuously variable compressor recirculation valve and a wastegate are adjusted in complementary frequency bands to move compressor operation away from a surge limit and reduce boost delivery errors. An intake throttle is also concurrently adjusted to offset manifold air-flow rate errors resulting from the wastegate or recirculation valve adjustments.

  • Publication number: 20140174074
Abstract: An engine system comprises a first turbocharger including a first wastegate, first wastegate actuator, and first turbocharger sensor, a second turbocharger including a second wastegate, second wastegate actuator, and second turbocharger sensor, and a controller configured to adjust the first wastegate actuator so that a parameter of the first turbocharger matches a parameter of the second turbocharger, based on output from the first and second turbocharger sensors. In this way, turbocharger output between the two turbochargers may be balanced.

  • Patent number: 8739530
Abstract: An engine system is provided. The system comprises an engine, first and second compressors supplying air to the engine, a first compressor recirculation valve adjustable to two restriction levels, and a second compressor recirculation valve adjustable to three or more restriction levels. In this way, the first and second compressor recirculation valves may be controlled to avoid compressor surge while providing a sufficient amount of boost to meet power demands.

  • Publication number: 20140060009
Abstract: A vehicle system operation method is provided. The method comprises, during a first operating condition, increasing back pressure in a first exhaust conduit positioned upstream of a turbine and downstream of a first emission control device and during a second operating condition, reducing back pressure in the first exhaust conduit and flowing boosted air from downstream of a compressor into a second exhaust conduit positioned upstream of a second emission control device and downstream of the turbine.

  • Publication number: 20140048049
Abstract: Embodiments for a charge air cooler are provided. In one example, an engine method comprises increasing intake air flow velocity through a charge air cooler and coordinately adjusting a position of one or more of an intake manifold throttle and a turbocharger wastegate in response to the increased intake air flow velocity to maintain torque. In this way, intake air flow velocity may be increased while maintaining desired torque.

  • Publication number: 20130305718
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for raising an exhaust temperature to spin a turbocharger turbine and reduce turbo-lag. Pressurized air is discharged from a boost reservoir into an intake manifold while spark retard is increased to expedite exhaust heating while also increasing a net combustion torque. By expediting turbine spin-up in response to a tip-in, turbo-lag is reduced and engine performance is improved.

  • Patent number: 8572961
Abstract: Various systems and methods for controlling a turbocharger of an engine via a wastegate are described. In one example, actuation of the wastegate is limited when outside a range, the limits of the range varying with boost pressure, turbine inlet pressure, turbine outlet pressure, and atmospheric pressure. In this manner, a tracking error may be reduced when controlling the boost pressure and using the boost pressure to actuate the wastegate in a boost-based wastegate configuration.
