  • Publication number: 20230398855
Abstract: A wheel assembly for an electrical vehicle. The wheel assembly comprising a hub integral with an electrical motor, and a fluid actuated fail-safe brake fitted to the assembly with at least one braking surface for frictional engagement with the rotor of the electrical motor. The brake in its non-actuated state is engaged with the rotor, and when fluidally actuated the brake is released to allow rotation of the rotor. A solenoid valve having a normally open state is in fluid communication with the pressurised fluid used to fluidally actuate the brake, and the solenoid valve is a closed when electrically powered thereby allowing fluid actuation to release the brake. In the event of a loss of electrical power the solenoid valve will revert to the normally open state, so that the brake is non-actuated and applies a braking force to the rotor.

  • Patent number: 11780283
Abstract: A suspension and drive mechanism for a steerable wheel of a vehicle, comprising a wheel support assembly supporting the wheel having a rolling axis and a wheel width defined by inner and outer wheel edges. Front and rear upper control arms coupled between a chassis and the wheel support assembly, and front and rear lower control arms between the chassis and the wheel support assembly. The front and rear upper control arms being coupled to the wheel support assembly above the rolling axis and inboard of the wheel inner edge, and front and rear lower control arms being coupled to the wheel support assembly below the rolling axis and inboard of the wheel inner edge. The control arms are angled so as to establish a virtual steering pivot axis for the wheel support assembly, the virtual steering pivot axis extending transverse of the rolling axis and located within the width of the wheel.

  • Patent number: 9421853
Abstract: A vehicle includes a vehicle structure that extends along a longitudinal axis. An engine includes a crankshaft that defines a crank axis disposed substantially transverse to the longitudinal axis. A transmission includes an output shaft that defines a transmission output axis substantially parallel with the crank axis. The transmission output axis is disposed nearer the forward end of the vehicle structure than the crank axis. The crank axis is disposed vertically above the transmission output axis a distance of about 140 mm. The engine includes at least one cylinder bore that defines a bore axis disposed perpendicular to and may intersect the crank axis. The bore axis may be angled toward the forward end of the vehicle structure to define an angle between the bore axis and a vertical plane. The angle between the bore axis and the vertical plane may be about 18°.
