  • Publication number: 20080113683
Abstract: Embodiments relate to a mobile device comprising: a processor; a display responsive to the processor; a plurality of wireless communication subsystems responsive to the processor; and a memory. The memory is accessible to the processor and stores program code executable by the processor for executing a user interface application. The user interface application is configured to determine a first connection status of the mobile device with respect to a cellular network and a second connection status with respect to a wireless local area network (WLAN). The user interface application, when executed by the processor, is further configured to cause the display to display a selected combination of icons in three display fields in a banner area of the display. The combination of icons is selected from a plurality of icon combinations based on the determined first connection status and the second connection status.

  • Publication number: 20080113665
Abstract: Embodiments relate generally to mobile devices comprising a processor, a display responsive to the processor, a plurality of wireless communication subsystems responsive to the processor and a memory. The memory stores program code executable by the processor for executing a connection manager application. The connection manager application is configured to monitor and control a wireless connection status of each of the plurality of wireless communication subsystems. The wireless connection status may be one of “off”, “on but not connected” and “on and connected”.

  • Publication number: 20080106516
Abstract: An improved handheld electronic device includes an input apparatus, an output apparatus, and a processor apparatus. The input apparatus includes a multi-axis input device such as a rollerball, trackball, joystick or touchpad, allowing the focus of a user interface program to be moved about a display from one screen object presented on that display to another. Up to four screen objects are presented on the display, each of those screen objects being positioned towards a corner of the display to enable a user to blindly operate the multi-axis input device, making use of a capture effect in which the focus of a user interface program is resisted from moving beyond an edge of the display, to guide movement of the focus to a given one of the up to four screen objects.

  • Patent number: 7312798
Abstract: The present invention provides a novel device and method for controlling the display of electronic information. The device can be based on the computing environment of an enhanced personal digital assistant with cellular telephone and electronic message capabilities. The device is operable to present, on its display, user customizable information, such as wallpaper, in conjunction with non-customizable information, such as icons. The device is also operable to perform a transformation such that the user customizable information and non-customizable information are more legible than if no transformation had occurred.

  • Publication number: 20070271527
Abstract: A home screen user interface provides application slots for invoking application interfaces for data communication, voice communication (as available) and calendar functions. Associated with the respective application slots are 1-n event slots for displaying individual events from the associated application. Selected communication events or calendar events (e.g. most recent communication events or upcoming calendar events) may be displayed to provide a user with a snapshot of the current day. The home screen may be displayed in accordance with a theme defining display and information attributes.

  • Patent number: 7174361
Abstract: Methods and apparatuses are disclosed for use in network-centric computing for scripting user-interface components together on an as-needed basis for purposes of executing a software application preferably stored on a server. The application may be called from a container/desktop of a client which in turn launches a script. The script may be stored on a server, on the desktop, or on a removable media, such as an optical or magnetic diskette. The script determines each task to be performed in the application and calls each node associated with the tasks. The script further verifies the policies of the container/desktop with respect to invoking, initializing, and executing the node. Once a task has been performed on the client, the script determines the next node, if any, and may discard the previous node in accordance with the policy framework of the container/desktop.

  • Publication number: 20060112167
Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing rich content to media devices are disclosed. Information content is converted at a content provider system for transmission to a media device over a wireless communication network. The converted content is processed by a media engine on the media device. The content is preferable converted at the content provider system into a binary format having separate visual elements and behavior elements.

  • Publication number: 20060059430
Abstract: Methods and devices that enable the customization of colors in a user interface by using a palette to define colors. The palette includes strings that have color values assigned to them. The strings are referred to in style sheets where color attributes are specified, such that colors can be redefined in the palette rather than in the style sheet.

  • Publication number: 20060047745
Abstract: An improved system and method for managing data on a handheld electronic device includes a server that periodically pushes data to a particular handheld electronic device, with the data being stored on the handheld electronic device by way of a routine running in the background whereby such reception and storage is generally transparent to a user. The data can be any type of data and may be data that is desired by the user or that fits a profile or preference of the user. The profile can, for instance, be predetermined and/or can be customized by the user and/or can reflect a preference of the user. The data pushed to the handheld electronic device can also be related in some fashion to a geographic disposition of the handheld electronic device. Such pushing of data and storage is managed by a routine running in the background of the handheld electronic device. The routine enables current data to be maintained on the handheld electronic device for ready access by a user.

  • Publication number: 20060019707
Abstract: An improved hand held electronic device and an associated method provide facilitated telephone dialing by providing audible sound tags in the form of spoken words representative of numbers that can be selected by a user for dialing. The handheld electronic device includes an input apparatus that can generate a plurality of navigational inputs and at least a first selecting input. The input apparatus may include a rotatable dial, the rotation of which provides navigational inputs, and the dial may be translatable, with the translation generating a selecting input. When a processor of the handheld electronic device detects one of the navigational inputs, the handheld electronic device outputs an audible sound in the form of a spoken word of the digit that corresponds with that navigational input.
