  • Patent number: 11204014
Abstract: A wave energy converter comprises a power generator, characterized by an axial length along a longitudinal axis; the power generator being configured to tilt about a horizontal axis perpendicular to the longitudinal axis. The tilt results in a conversion of kinetic energy, present in a group of water waves causing the tilt, to electrical energy. The axial length is less than approximately one quarter of the average wavelength expected to be encountered in a dominant sub-group of waves within the group of waves. The power generator generates power independent of whether or not the wave energy converter is tethered to any solid object at a position that is fixed independent of water motion.

  • Patent number: 8570518
Abstract: A test system includes an optical medium, a binding agent capable of capturing a target complex, and a light detector. The optical medium provides a light path, and the binding agent is positioned to hold the target complex in an evanescent field created by propagation of light along the light path. The complex interacts with the evanescent field and emits light that the detector positioned to detect. The optical medium and the detector can be included in an optical integrated circuit where detected light passes through the optical medium transverse to the direction of the light path.

  • Patent number: 8385028
Abstract: A galvanic isolator having a split circuit element, a polymeric substrate, a transmitter and receiver is disclosed. The split circuit element has first and second portions, the first portion being disposed on a first surface of the substrate and the second portion being disposed a second surface of the substrate. The transmitter receives an input signal and couples a signal derived from the input signal to the first portion. The receiver is connected to the second portion of the circuit element and generates an output signal that is coupled to an external circuit. The galvanic isolator can be economically fabricated on conventional printed circuit board substrates and flexible circuit substrates.

  • Patent number: 8384663
Abstract: A system for generating position information includes a reflector, an image collection system, and a processor. The image collection system is configured to collect at least two sets of image data, where one set of image data includes a stronger indication of the reflector than the other set of image data. The two sets of image data can be collected in many different ways and may include using a retroreflector as the reflector. The two sets of image data are used to generate position information related to the reflector. In particular, position information related to the reflector is generated by taking the difference between the two set of image data. Because one set of image data includes a stronger indication of the reflector than the other set of image data, the difference between the two sets of image data gives a definitive indication of the reflector's position.

  • Patent number: 7812822
Abstract: Each opto-mechanical pointing device includes a housing having a base that two or more rollers extend beyond to make contact with a surface. An optical module that includes a light source and a detector track the motion of the opto-mechanical pointing device directly or indirectly. Light reflecting off markings positioned opposite of each detector is used to determine the speed and distance traveled by an opto-electrical pointing device. Alternatively, the speed and distance traveled by an opto-electrical pointing device is determined by monitoring the tilt or rotation of the opto-mechanical pointing device with respect to the surface beneath the pointing device.
