Publication number: 20230356591Abstract: Aspects of the technology relate to assisting a passenger in an autonomous vehicle without a driver. For instance, after a door of the vehicle is opened, a predetermined period of time may be waited by processors of computing devices of the vehicle. After waiting the predetermined period of time and when the vehicle's door remains open, a set of instructions for closing the vehicle's door may be played by the processors through a speaker of the vehicle. Once the door of the vehicle is closed, an announcement may be played by the processors through the speaker requesting that the passenger press a first button to initiate a ride to a destination. In response to the first button being pressed, the ride to the destination may be initiated by the processors by maneuvering the vehicle autonomously to the destination.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 13, 2023Publication date: November 9, 2023Inventors: Maria Moon, Julien Charles Mercay, Kyle Bechtel, Ryan Powell, Clement Wright

Publication number: 20230347938Abstract: The technology provides enhanced localization approaches using vehicle-obtained information in place of or to enhance global positioning information to localize a user's position. Such information can be shared with the user's client device in real-time prior to pickup or meeting at a selected location. This can supplement or replace inaccurate localization information available at the client device, and can be done as needed when the user is within a threshold range of one or more autonomous vehicles. A client device of a user can compute its position using the vehicle positioning information. The vehicle positioning approach may be performed when the user is within a certain range of one or more vehicles. Vehicle localization information may also be used to correct the client device's localization information. Here, using hyper-accurate vehicle positioning, one or more vehicles can compute pseudorange errors for each “visible” satellite in a global positioning service.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 27, 2023Publication date: November 2, 2023Inventors: Kevin Malta, Craig Lewin Robinson, Julien Charles Mercay

Publication number: 20190100135Abstract: Aspects of the present disclosure relate to generating notifications of acceleration events for a vehicle operating in an autonomous driving mode. As an example, instructions generated by a planning system of the vehicle are monitored. Determining whether the instructions identify changes in lateral and longitudinal acceleration for the autonomous driving mode. That an acceleration threshold will be met when the vehicle proceeds according to the changes is determined. A notification is generated based on the determination that an acceleration threshold will be met, the notification identifying that an acceleration event has occurred. The notification is displayed to a passenger of the vehicle on a display of the vehicle.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 2, 2017Publication date: April 4, 2019Inventors: Juliet Rothenberg, Nirmal Patel, Renaud-Roland Hubert, Ioan-Alexandru Sucan, Julien Charles Mercay, Keith Hutchings, Peter Crandall, Ryan Powell

Patent number: 9606709Abstract: A layer control tool for controlling the display of geographic data layers in a geographic information system is provided. The layer control tool can be presented in overlaying the geographic imagery. The layer control tool can include a plurality of identifiers associated with a set of geographic data layers that can be displayed in conjunction with the geographic imagery. A user can adjust or control the display of geographic data layers in conjunction with the geographic imagery by interacting with the floating layer control tool. For instance, a user can interact with the floating layer control tool, for instance by tapping a touch screen, to identify a selected geographic data layer in the set of geographic data layers. Responsive to this user interaction, the geographic information system can display the geographic data layer in conjunction with the geographic imagery and hide other previous displayed geographic data layers.Type: GrantFiled: December 27, 2012Date of Patent: March 28, 2017Assignee: Google Inc.Inventors: David Kommann, Julien Charles Mercay

Patent number: 9483497Abstract: Systems and methods for management of geographic data layers in a geographic information system are provided. A layer control tool can be presented in conjunction with the geographic imagery. The layer control tool can provide a control interface to allow the user to manage the display of various geographic data layers in conjunction with the geographic imagery. The layer control tool can include a dynamic control list of geographic data layers. Geographic data layers can be identified for inclusion in the dynamic control list and/or ordered within the dynamic control list based on frequency of user interaction with the geographic data layers. In a particular implementation, the geographic data layers are identified for inclusion in the dynamic control list and/or ordered within the dynamic control list based on a layer score associated with each geographic data layer.Type: GrantFiled: October 6, 2015Date of Patent: November 1, 2016Assignee: Google Inc.Inventors: David Kornmann, Julien Charles Mercay

Publication number: 20150177912Abstract: Methods and systems for presenting geographic imagery in conjunction with content detailing specific information about the geographic imagery are provided. More particularly, a user interface can present geographic imagery in conjunction with a display element, such as a text balloon, a text frame, or other element for presenting information to a user. The display element can provide content, such as text and other information, detailing specific information about the geographic imagery. As the user analyzes the information presented in the display element, for instance by scrolling through the information, the geographic imagery can be automatically updated based on the content provided in the display element. For instance, the geographic imagery can be updated with additional vectors, overlays, geographic data layers, camera views, etc., to display or highlight the information presented in the display element as the different aspects of the information come into focus in the display element.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 28, 2012Publication date: June 25, 2015Inventors: David Kornmann, Julien Charles Mercay
