Patent number: 10180746Abstract: A hardware enabled interpolating sensor allows for anti-aliased acquisition of data. Electrodes coupled with resistive material are disposed on either side of a transducer material, such that an impinging signal varies the electrical characteristics of the transducer material. A controller scans the electrodes and analyzes the variation in the electrical characteristics to generate data. Based upon the known characteristics of the resistive material, an interpolated image is generated from the data which is inherently anti-aliased. Additionally, an interpolating display comprising electrodes disposed on either side of an emission material is described, which allows for emission regions of varying intensity, area, and so forth.Type: GrantFiled: July 29, 2010Date of Patent: January 15, 2019Assignee: Amazon Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Ilya D. Patent number: 9990063Abstract: Techniques for operating electronic paper displays of respective electronic devices are described. One set of techniques described below enhances user experience by utilizing multiple different waveform and/or display-update modes when rendering content on these displays. Another set of techniques are able to render lines on electronic paper displays having variable and arbitrary darkness, despite the restricted color depth inherent in these displays. In addition, this disclosure describes techniques for utilizing supersampling to select which shades to render on an electronic paper display of an electronic device. In still other implementations, the techniques described herein allocate a predefined frame rate of an electronic paper display between multiple different application components requesting to update the display, resulting smooth animation and relatively high-frame updates.Type: GrantFiled: September 28, 2011Date of Patent: June 5, 2018Assignee: Amazon Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Julien G. Patent number: 9785272Abstract: A force sensitive touch sensor is configured to distinguish objects touching the surface based on a touch profile. Magnetometers detect the presence, location, orientation, and angle of a stylus comprising a magnet. Presence of the magnetic field in conjunction with touches on the force sensitive touch sensor provides additional comparisons to distinguish whether a touch is from a human hand, a particular portion of a stylus, or other object.Type: GrantFiled: July 29, 2010Date of Patent: October 10, 2017Assignee: Amazon Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Ilya D. Patent number: 9740340Abstract: Components such as touch sensors, antennas, and so forth may use arrays of elements to form operational components. Disposition of such an array between the user and a display device, pre-printed image, and so forth may result in moiré patterns or other unpleasant visual distractions. Visually consistent arrays utilize conductive mesh regions which are less visible than larger individual conductors. Non-conductive regions may be formed within an otherwise conductive mesh by introducing breaks in the conductive elements comprising the mesh. Additionally, in some implementations the non-conductive regions provide additional mechanical support.Type: GrantFiled: July 29, 2010Date of Patent: August 22, 2017Assignee: Amazon Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Ilya D. Rosenberg, Julien G. Beguin, Kenneth H. Perlin

Patent number: 9729649Abstract: This disclosure relates to systems and methods for managing communication application availability based, at least in part, on a user's willingness or unwillingness to communicate with another user. In one instance, the availability may apply to all the communication applications associated with a device using a single interface. In another instance, the availability may be communication applications specific, in that a user may specify one communication application as available and another communication as unavailable from a single interface. The availability information may be provided to other users who may elect to use an available communication application that is more likely to get a faster response than when using an unavailable communication. In another instance, the user may manage communication application availability based on the time and location of the user device.Type: GrantFiled: August 15, 2012Date of Patent: August 8, 2017Assignee: Amazon Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Julien G. Patent number: 9477306Abstract: Substrates for components such as a display, touch sensor, multifunction stackup, and so forth may incorporate one or more haptic actuators configured to generate haptic output. These actuators may be formed from a portion of a body of the substrate, or separate pieces bonded or otherwise affixed to the substrate. Audible output resulting from activation of the actuators may be minimized by coupling the actuators such that they produce a physical displacement of the body of the substrate within, rather than orthogonal to, the plane of the body of the substrate.Type: GrantFiled: December 16, 2010Date of Patent: October 25, 2016Assignee: Amazon Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Joseph J. Patent number: 9373049Abstract: Techniques for determining whether touch-input gestures approximate straight lines and for animating a display with such gestures are described. Some techniques receive a gesture input through a display, define an oriented bounding box for the gesture, and determine whether the gesture approximates a straight line based on an amount of the gesture that is contained within the oriented bounding box. Other techniques determine a linear regression line for pixel locations comprising a gesture, determine distances of the pixel locations from the linear regression line, and render the set of pixel locations to the display based on the distances and a threshold. Further techniques record a gesture input through a display, determine a sequence of frame updates for the gesture, each frame update including a part of the gesture, and provide the frame updates for sequential updating of the display to effect an animation of the gesture on the display.Type: GrantFiled: April 5, 2012Date of Patent: June 21, 2016Assignee: Amazon Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Connor Spencer Blue Worley, Julien G. Beguin, Tomer Moscovich

Patent number: 9244562Abstract: A force-sensitive touch sensor detects location and force of touches applied to the sensor. Movement of an object touching the force-sensitive touch sensor correlates to movement of a pointer on a display device. Varying levels of force applied to the force-sensitive touch sensor are interpreted as different commands. Objects displayed on the display device can be manipulated by a combination of gestures across a surface of the force-sensitive touch sensor and changes in force applied to the force-sensitive touch sensor.Type: GrantFiled: July 29, 2010Date of Patent: January 26, 2016Assignee: Amazon Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Ilya D. Patent number: 9195351Abstract: In some implementations, a stylus having a variable capacitive coupling mechanism may include a conductive stylus tip and a conductive stylus body. A spacer of resilient material may be positioned between the stylus body and the stylus tip. The spacer may be compressed when a user presses the stylus tip against a contact surface an electronic device having of a capacitive touch sensor. The compression of the spacer moves the stylus body closer to a proximal portion of the tip, which increases the capacitive coupling of the stylus with the touch sensor and provides an indication of the amount of pressure applied to the stylus tip by the user. In some examples, the stylus may further include a magnet, and the electronic device may include at least one magnetic field sensor to detect the orientation and/or angle of the magnet and, thus, the orientation and/or angle of the stylus.Type: GrantFiled: March 29, 2012Date of Patent: November 24, 2015Assignee: Amazon Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Ilya D. Patent number: 8545035Abstract: The color patterned front light (CPFL) may be implemented by shining light through a side of a CPFL panel that is situated adjacent to and in front of a monochromic reflective display (MRD). The CPFL may direct one of red, green, blue, or white light through a rear surface of the panel and onto each of the pixels in the MRD. The pixels may be grouped in blocks, such as n-by-m or n-by-n blocks of pixels. The pixels in the block may be selectively activated by the MRD to either absorb the light or reflect the light shone on the respective pixel. By adjusting the representation of the pixels in the MRD, the block may appear to change color based on the colored light from the CPFL that is reflected outward from the display.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 2011Date of Patent: October 1, 2013Assignee: Amazon Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Julien G.
