Another embodiment of the present invention is to provide a novel secondary battery. A surface treatment layer, specifically a metal film typified by a titanium film, is formed on the surface of a SiOx particle. Providing the surface treatment layer can suppress rapid volume expansion of SiOx, thereby reducing a change in volume of the negative electrode active material layer or reducing formation of a space between the negative electrode active materials. Furthermore, providing such a metal film on the particle surface can improve the conductivity.
