    Abstract: Provided are a device and method for providing a three-dimensional PIP image, for combining and outputting a main image with a PIP image. A device for providing a three-dimensional PIP image according to one embodiment of the present invention comprises: an image acquisition unit for acquiring a main three-dimensional image and a two-dimensional or three-dimensional PIP image from a broadcast signal, external device, or recording medium; a PIP-combining unit for combining the main image and the PIP image; and a three-dimensional formatter for formatting the combined image of the main image and the PIP image into a format that can be stereoscopically displayed. Accordingly, an image may be provided with a main three-dimensional image and a two-dimensional PIP image or a main three-dimensional image and a three-dimensional PIP image which are overlaid.

Accordingly, by changing the polarizing direction between a left image and a right image in synchronization with screen-refreshing, crosstalk can be minimized when displaying a three-dimensional image and a user satisfaction with three-dimensional images can be increased.

    Abstract: An apparatus, which forms a stereoscopic image by alternately displaying a left image and a right image, for reproducing a stereoscopic image in a pause mode, includes: a decoder unit configured to perform decoding on received image information; a 3D format generation unit configured to pair left and right images which are temporally consistent to generate stereoscopic image data; and a user input processing unit configured to receive a user selection with respect to image reproduction and delivering a corresponding signal to the decoder unit and the 3D format generation unit, wherein when the user input processing receives a to selection of a pause mode from the user, the decoder unit stops the decoding operation on the basis of the signal from the user input processing unit and the 3D format generation unit generates the stereoscopic image data by using the same left and right video frames.

The image reproduction may also include receiving a setting for an object from the user when the trick mode is selected, and automatically reproducing the stereoscopic image at a normal speed, when an image including the object is reached while reproducing the stereoscopic image is performed in the trick mode, wherein setting for the object is received prior to being provided in the trick mode.

    Abstract: A method, which forms a stereoscopic image by alternately displaying a left image and a right image, for reproducing a stereoscopic image in a trip mode, includes: reproducing a stereoscopic image; receiving a selection of a trip mode from a user while the stereoscopic image is being reproduced; and when the trip mode is entered, changing the stereoscopic image into a two-dimensional (2D) image by selectively displaying one of a left image and a right image. Preferably, in selecting one of the left image and the right image, any one of the left image and the right image is determined on the basis of quality of input image data or a performance efficiency of an apparatus which is reproducing the stereoscopic image. More preferably, after any one of the left image and the right image is selected, data of an image which has not been selected from each frame may be replaced by data of a selected image, to thereby change the stereoscopic image into the 2D image without causing a change in a frame rate.
