  • Patent number: 6614587
Abstract: A reliable and inexpensive method for deploying, operating and maintaining optical amplifiers in a variety of optical networks under a wide range of conditions using channel number reference tables. A preferred embodiment of the current invention may control one or more optical amplifiers or gain blocks operating in a variety of modes such as AGC mode, ALC mode and hybrid AGC/ALC mode without requiring the use of expensive channel counters. Channel number reference tables may be calculated based on initial input optical power output readings and a count of the number of channels initially served by the amplifier. According to the current invention, changes in the number of channels may be monitored and used to control a gain block by monitoring the gain block input optical power output, converting to a gain block voltage and referencing the channel number reference table.

  • Patent number: 6347089
Abstract: The present invention includes an Ethernet frame switching system for receiving and transmitting data frames from and to a plurality of ports. The frame switching system includes a plurality of port control units for managing the transmission and reception procedural processes with a physical layer device. The frame switching system further includes a queue management unit (QMU) connected with data buses to the port control unit. The data frames received from or transmitted to the port control unit are managed by the QMU that these data frames received are transmitted directly to and data frame for transmission or retrieved directly from a single shared data frame buffer such that the local data frame buffer is not required in each of the port control units.

  • Patent number: 6005863
Abstract: A data frame switching apparatus has number data ports and a port traffic management unit for each port. Each port traffic management unit includes a physical layer unit for receiving and transmitting data frames, a serial shift register for temporarily storing a portion of each received data frame in serial data format, and a port controller for extracting each data frame's source and destination address from the portion of the data frame stored in the serial shift register. A crossbar switch connects any specified one of the data ports that is receiving a data frame to another one of the data ports so as to transmit the received data frame to a corresponding destination.

  • Patent number: 5991471
Abstract: A Mach-Zehnder optical modulator is provided having first and second modulation electrodes on respective first and second interferometric arms for receiving modulating electric fields, and the two modulation electrodes are of different lengths, the ratio of the lengths being designed to control the relative bias of the two arms, thereby provide for adjustment and optimization of frequency chirp, in a positive or negative chirp MZ modulator or in a configurable chirp MZ modulator. The modulator may have an asymmetric input y-junction coupler and an asymmetric output y-junction coupler to provide unequal power splitting, and interferometric arms defining two optical paths, which may be of equal or unequal length so as to generate a fixed phase difference of 0, .pi. or .pi./2. Preferably, the device is operated with equal push-pull drive, although non-equal push pull drive may alternatively be used.

Abstract: A linear CCD (charge-coupled device) including: a photodiode-array having a plurality of photodiodes for converting incident light plural charges, respectively; and a charge transfer part for transferring the charges of the photodiodes during a first phase of a first and second clock signal and for moving the charges during a second phase of the first and second clock signals. The charge transfer part includes: plural first shift electrodes connected to the photodiodes, respectively, for forming potential wells that receive charges from the photodiodes, respectively, during the first phase of the first and second clock signals; and plural second shift electrodes located between the first shift electrodes, respectively, for forming potential wells that receive the charges from the potential wells of the first shift electrodes during the second phase of the first and second clock signals. No shift gates are needed between charge outlets of the photodiodes and the first shift electrodes.

  • Patent number: 5799119
Abstract: A Mach Zehnder (MZ) modulator with improved coupling of input and output fibers is provided. The MZ modulator combines the advantages of weakly guided input sections with strongly guided sections to optimize the coupling efficiency and selectivity of the device. Improved coupling between weakly and strongly guided sections of waveguide is provided by an intermediate tapered waveguide section which provides gradually changing mode confinement, which reduces the mode mismatch loss and therefore suppresses the reflection at the junction between the weakly and strongly guided sections of the waveguide.

  • Patent number: 5778113
Abstract: A multi-quantum-well Mach-Zehnder optical phase modulator selectively generates positive and negative frequency chirp. The modulator has an asymmetric input y-junction coupler and an asymmetric output y-junction coupler joined by interferometric arms defining two optical paths of unequal length so as to generate a fixed phase difference of .pi. or an integral odd multiple thereof. The modulator has electrodes on each arm for receiving modulating electric fields in a push-pull relationship. A control electrode is provided on one of the arms for receiving a control electric field. The modulator, when driven without any control electric field generates negative frequency chirp, and selectively generates positive frequency chirp in response to adjustment of the control electric field. As an alternative, the length differential between respective arms can be selected to generate a phase difference of .pi./2, in which case control electrodes are required on each of the interferometric arms.

  • Patent number: 5694504
Abstract: A MQW semiconductor Mach Zehnder phase modulator is formed by two Y-junctions (12, 32), each having a single waveguide (14) optically coupled with two branch waveguides (18, 20). The branch waveguides of the two Y-juntions are optically coupled in Mach-Zehnder configuration that, under zero bias conditions, has one interferometric arm longer than the other to provide a .pi. phase shift. The additional length is preferably accommodated in the branches of the Y-junctions. The phase shift, in combination with voltage dependent absorption properties and non-linear phase variations of the MQW guided regions in the Mach-Zehnder modulator results in a negative chirp and high extinction ratio for an equal, push-pull device configuration.
