  • Patent number: 6859342
Abstract: A magnetic head device having excellent sliding contact between its slider surface and magnetic tape at the time of scanning is provided. This magnetic head device has a base member, a thin-film magnetic head formed in contact with the base member and accommodated in a non-magnetic layer with the top end of a magnetic gap being exposed, and an auxiliary member which sandwiches the non-magnetic layer between the auxiliary member and the base member. On the top ends of the base member, the non-magnetic layer, and the auxiliary member, a slider surface on which magnetic tape slides is formed in the aligning direction of the base member, the non-magnetic layer, and the auxiliary member, or in a direction inclined at a predetermined angle to the aligning direction. Accordingly, the non-magnetic layer can be made thin, and the area of the non-magnetic layer on the slider surface is small.

  • Patent number: 6538855
Abstract: A magneto-resistive thin film magnetic head is provided, which magnetic head includes: a base; a first yoke provided on the base and separated by a gap into first and second portions, the first portion including a side which opposes a magnetic recording medium; a magneto-resistive element which is magnetically coupled to the first and second portions of the first yoke and detects a magnetic recording signal; a second yoke formed on the first yoke so as to form a reproducing head gap between the first portion of the first yoke and the second yoke; and a third yoke provided between the first portion of the first yoke and the base so as to be magnetically coupled to the first portion of the first yoke. The reproducing head gap, the first portion of the first yoke, the magneto-resistive element, the second portion of the first yoke, ad the second yoke form a cut magnetic circuit.

  • Patent number: 6282067
Abstract: A magnetoresistive effect element 5 is physically configured such that the element width is at least three times as large as the element height. A plurality of domain control layers 11 to 13 are located between the magnetoresistive effect element 5 and a plurality of detecting electrodes 8 to 10 in a state that the domain control layers 11 to 13 are closely formed on the magnetoresistive effect element 5. Each of the domain control layers 11 to 13 applies a unidirectional magnetic field to a region of the magnetoresistive effect element 5 vertically disposed in a guard band of the magnetic recording medium 4, the guard band having no information recorded therein. The unidirectional magnetic field is directed in an orientation of an initial magnetization in a single magnetoresistive effect element, the orientation of which depends on a direction of on an easy axis of the magnetoresistive effect element 5.

  • Patent number: 5218499
Abstract: A thin film magnetic head for perpendicular magnetic recording includes a magnetic member lying on a wear-resistant substrate of a non-magnetic material and defining a return path for magnetic flux. The magnetic member has a main groove formed in one of its principal surfaces in parallel to a sliding surface adapted to face a magnetic recording medium, and a narrow groove formed in the same principal surface and crossing the main groove at right angles thereto. The main and narrow grooves are filled with a non-magnetic material. The magnetic member carries thereon a laminate formed immediately above the intersection of the main and narrow grooves, and consisting at least of a thin-film conductor coil, an interlayer insulating film, a main pole film and a head-protecting film which are formed one upon another. The narrow groove has a width which is larger than that of the main pole film. The magnetic member is connected to the main pole film through a via hole portion.

  • Patent number: 5027246
Abstract: A thin film magnetic head for use in a running direction with respect to a magnetic recording medium and in which a first magnetic material, a non-magnetic layer, a conductor layer, and a second magnetic material layer which constitute a pair of magnetic poles in cooperation with said first magnetic material layer, are laminated on a non-magnetic substrate, has the conductor layer and the second magnetic material layer formed to be parallel to the running direction. The first magnetic layer is formed to be nonparallel to the running direction in at least an opposed surface area of the head which is to be opposed to a magnetic recording medium. The second magnetic material layer is formed so that it is opposed to the magnetic recording medium at the opposed surface area and so that the second magnetic material layer progressively extends away from the magnetic recording medium in an area of the head which is outside said opposed surface area.

  • Patent number: 5014148
Abstract: Improvements in the perpendicular magnetic recording and reproducing head of the type in which a main magnetic pole and an auxiliary magnetic pole are arranged as a unitary structure on one side of a magnetic recording medium. Problems are solved in relation to pseudo pulses in the output signals and change in the level, contributing to improving the sensitivity for recording and reproduction. The magnetic head is used for perpendicular VTR's. The perpendicular magnetic recording and reproducing head of the invention comprises a support block which consists of a main magnetic pole, a non-magnetic block which holds said main magnetic pole to form a surface opposed to the magnetic recording medium, and an auxiliary magnetic pole block which supports part of said main magnetic pole and which supports said non-magnetic block; and a magnetic block provided on the side surface of said support block in the direction of track width.
