    Abstract: Disclosed herein is a method and apparatus for determining the velocity and direction of motion of moving object by directing two coherent light beams onto the object and thereby causing moving speckles including information on the velocity to be formed in a diffraction plane, deriving time-space cross-correlations from the variations of time-space intensities of the speckles, analyzing the motion of the object in the two directional components based on the time-space cross-correlations and determining the velocity and direction of motion at the same time.
