    Abstract: A ferrule has a cylindrical body constructed from a single piece of material and having an outer circumferential surface. A first insertion hole of the cylindrical body is bounded by a first inner surface of the cylindrical body and is configured to receive therein a first preselected portion of an optical fiber so that the first preselected portion of the optical fiber is in direct contact with the first inner surface of the cylindrical body. A second insertion hole of the cylindrical body is disposed in communication with the first insertion hole. The second insertion hole is bounded by a second inner surface of the cylindrical body and is configured to receive therein a second preselected portion of the optical fiber enclosed in a buffer coating so that the second preselected portion of the optical fiber is in direct contact with the second inner surface of the cylindrical body.

    Abstract: An optical functioning component has a tubular housing with a front end side having substantially the same shape as that of a front end of a removable plug housing of an optical connector plug. A rear end side of the tubular housing has a shape configured for connection to the optical connector plug when the plug housing is removed from the optical connector plug. A ferrule is provided on the front end side of the tubular housing and has a mechanism capable of attenuating, cutting-off, reflecting or absorbing a specific wavelength of light. An optical connection sleeve is connected to an end of the ferrule. A frame supports the ferrule and the optical connection sleeve and is mounted in the tubular housing for undergoing axial movement therein by a preselected amount.

    Abstract: An end face polishing method provides an end face polishing apparatus having a main body, a jig board mounted on the main body and supporting at least one workpiece, a polishing board mounted on the main body for undergoing rotational and revolving movements relative to the main body, and abrasive members each removably connectable to the polishing board for rotational and revolving movements therewith. Each of the abrasive members has an abrasive surface with a hardness that is either higher or lower than the hardness of the abrasive surface of the others of the abrasive members. An end face of a workpiece is successively brought into pressure contact with the abrasive surface of each of the abrasive members in descending order of hardness of the abrasive surfaces while rotating and revolving the polishing board to thereby successively polish the end face of the workpiece.

A rotation positioning part is formed in the flange part of the flange member for positioning the flange part relative to the holding member to provide a first clearance between the rotation positioning part and the engaging part of the holding member for restricting rotation of the ferrule about the fiber optical axis relative to the holding member. A rotation allowing part is formed in the flange part of the flange member and spaced from the engaging part of the holding member to provide a second clearance therebetween greater than the first clearance for allowing rotational movement of the ferrule so as to permit the ferrule to incline in a direction transverse to an axis of the optical connector.

A temperature control unit controls the temperature of the elastic member during the polishing operation to thereby polish the end face of the workpiece into a spherical surface during the polishing operation.
