Abstract: An azo compound and an ink composition containing the azo compound are used as inks for ink jet recording and have excellent gas (ozone) resistance when recording is done on special ink jet paper. The azo compound is represented by formula (1) or a tautomer thereof, or a salt of these. In formula (1), R1 represents a C1-C4 alkyl group, R2 represents a cyano group, R3 and R4 each independently represent a C1-C4 alkoxy, R5-R10 each independently represent a group represented by formula (2), and R11-R13 each independently represent a nitro group.

Specifically disclosed are a water-soluble azo compound represented by formula (1) or a salt thereof, and an ink composition containing the compound or salt.
