    Abstract: A vehicle occupant restraint system (10) includes a center airbag (12) which, in an inflated state, extends between two vehicle seats (14) positioned next to each other and which has an inflatable torso gas bag (16) and an inflatable head gas bag (18) connected to the torso gas bag (16). The torso gas bag (16) comprises a laterally projecting, as seen in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle (L), inflatable protrusion (36) which is designed and arranged to abut, in the completely inflated state of the center airbag (12), against a vehicle structure (32) between the vehicle seats (14) and to support the center airbag (12) against a lateral force (F).
