  • Patent number: 4122294
Abstract: The method of forming a self-baking electrode consists of filling an electrode mass under pressure into a permanent current-carrying shell during melting in an electric furnace. The electrode mass is fed, according to the invention, in compliance with data obtained by continuous measuring of the temperature of the electrode being formed at several points along its height and in its cross-section, at a rate which is proportional to that of the electrode coking, shifting and burning-off.The device for realizing said method, comprises a charge-loading passage which is made in the form of a pipe, a permanent current-carrying mould communicating with a mass-feeding passage having presses fitted over it, an electrode drive mechanism and thermoelements for measuring the temperature of an electrode being shaped.

  • Patent number: 4061180
Abstract: An installation has a hollow cooled mould with a bottom plate having a cooled protrusion which partially enters the cavity of the cooled mould from underneath and forms the bottom of the mould at the beginning of melting. The protrusion is of a height exceeding that of the ingot forming walls of the cooled mould, and of a cross section allowing the cooled mould to be lowered to a level at which the ingot forming section of the cooled mould wall is below the upper end face of the cooled protrusion. The installation is compact in size and permits the use of a crane for upward removal of an ingot from the cooled mould.

  • Patent number: 4008364
Abstract: Apparatus for the continuous refining of metals, such as, lead, tin, comprising a distillation column built up of identical boxes set up one upon another and forming evaporation stages along which the metal flows off sequentially in the form of a thin film. Extending through all the column boxes are preferably three graphite heater rods set up in a row, the heater being preferable connected in a three-phase electric circuit. The heating of the metal film is conducive to the distillation of impurity vapors, referred to as volatilized impurities, flowing to condensing shields.
