  • Patent number: 7426161
Abstract: An optical recording method and apparatus with different recording rates are provided for effectively increasing the average recording rate. The optical recording method includes the steps of: controlling a recording rate with a constant linear velocity (CLV) control mode; recording data; judging whether the recording rate has to be increased according to a rotating speed of a spindle motor or a recording position; and performing a process for changing the rotating speed if the recording rate is increased, and continuing recording data at the same recording rate if the recording rate is not increased. The step for changing the rotating speed includes the steps of: pausing recording data; registering a paused zone of a disc; determining a new rotating speed of the spindle motor, and driving the spindle motor at the new rotating speed; and linking recording zones to continue recording data at a new recording rate from the paused zone, when the rotating speed of the spindle motor is stable.

  • Patent number: 7388818
Abstract: A link writing method for a recordable or rewritable compact disk includes recording a writing interruption address and enabling a succeeding writing process after the writing interruption. Enabling a succeeding writing process includes searching the linking area and enabling a start writing signal and activating a laser power. The method can link a succeeding writing area with a previously written interrupted area with sufficient accuracy to allow the data frame to be successfully processed by error correction within the host drive. The linking area may be positioned by counting the values of the interrupted block, the interrupted data frame, and the interrupted bit count or by detecting a blank area. Other techniques for positioning the linking area include detecting an unwritten area having a length greater than a maximum or writing a characteristic pattern after an interruption.

  • Patent number: 7212479
Abstract: An apparatus of detecting defects on an optical recording medium includes a defect signal generating circuit for generating a corresponding defect signal according to a surface defect of the optical recording medium, a first synchronous signal generator for generating a first synchronous signal, a defect signal locating circuit, a delay signal generating circuit, and an OR gate. The defect signal includes at least one pulse, whose width corresponds to the physical width of a surface defect. The delay signal generating circuit generates a delay signal corresponding to each pulse when the spacing between two adjacent pulses is smaller than a preset value. An OR operation is performed to the delay signal and the defect signal to obtain a defect extension signal. The first synchronous signal and a second synchronous signal for separating data recording sectors of the optical recording medium are employed to detect widths and addresses of surface defects.

Abstract: A digital delaying device for delaying an input signal includes a ring oscillator, a calibration unit, and at least one delay number calculation unit and delay channel. The ring oscillator includes loop-connected delay cells for outputting an oscillation clock. The calibration unit receives a reference clock and the oscillation clock and calculates a pulse number of the oscillation clock corresponding to each reference clock period. The pulse number serves as a period reference pulse number. The calculation unit receives the pulse number and a signal delay value, calculates a signal delay number corresponding to the signal delay value according to the pulse number, and outputs a selection signal. The delay channel includes a multiplexer and cascaded delay cells, which receives an input signal and generates delay signals with different delay timings. The multiplexer selects and outputs one of the delay signals as an output signal according to the selection signal.

  • Patent number: 7042951
Abstract: A digital sum variation (DSV) computation method and system is proposed, which is capable of determining the DSV value of a bit stream of channel-bit symbols to thereby find the optimal merge-bit symbol for insertion between each succeeding pair of the channel-bit symbols. This DSV computation method and system is characterized in the use of a Zero Digital Sum Variation (ZDSV) principle to determine the DSV. This DSV computation method and system can find the optimal merge-bit symbol for insertion between each succeeding pair of the channel-bit symbols in a more cost-effective manner with the need for a reduced amount of memory and utilizes a lookup table requiring a reduced amount of memory space for storage so that memory space can be reduced as compared to the prior art. This DSV computation method and system is therefore more advantageous to use than the prior art.
