  • Publication number: 20100321339
Abstract: A display apparatus includes a display having a pixelated display surface and an opposed surface, and a substantially planar light guide structure having a light emitting surface that is optically coupled to the opposed surface of the display. The light emitting surface of the light guide structure has an array of gratings arranged as a plurality of sub-arrays of gratings. At least some of the gratings of a given sub-array are configured to emit display light towards the opposed surface of said display, and at least one of the gratings of the given sub-array is configured to emit non-display light (e.g., IR light) towards the opposed surface of the display and to receive non-display light that is at least one of reflected from and scattered by an object that is proximate to the pixelated display surface. The display apparatus also comprises a plurality of light sensors that are disposed along at least two edges of the light guide structure and that are configured to detect the received non-display light.

  • Publication number: 20100207964
Abstract: The specification and drawings present a new apparatus and method for designing and using display devices with integrated backlight layer structure utilizing separate color diffractive out-coupling (e.g., diffraction out-coupling). A lower substrate of the display can be used to integrate the backlight component (or the backlight layer structure), thus enabling a thin module with the integrated backlighting.

  • Patent number: 7714801
Abstract: An electronic device, which comprises: at least two parts foldable in relation to each other, which can be turned into a first position and into a second position around a rotation axis; and a flexible display device, which extends over at least two foldable parts, covering them either entirely or partly. The flexible display device comprises: a folded position, to which the display device settles in the first position, and in which it folds around a first direction, which is parallel in relation to the rotation axis; and a curved position, to which the display device settles in the second position, and in which it curves around a second direction, which is transverse in relation to the rotation axis. A flexible display device can also be used with an electronic device.

  • Patent number: 6773114
Abstract: A portable device having an optical engine adapted to form an image from an image source in four different modes to allow a viewer to view the image. The image source is a microdisplay device, which can be reflective, transmissive or emissive. The display modes include a near-eye display (NED) mode, a near projection display (NPD) mode, a Window mode that provides a virtual image to a viewer at a distance, and a projection display mode that projects an image on a surface at a distance. The portable device has an internal light source to provide illumination to the image source for the first three modes. The portable device is further adapted to receive the light output from an external light source for use with the fourth mode.
