  • Patent number: 5029906
Abstract: A deformable sealing member is disposed between two surfaces such that a space is provided to at least one side of such sealing member. A smaller space may be provided to a second side of the sealing member. The sealing member is conformed to contact both surfaces. A pressure coming from the direction of the greater space between the two surfaces will cause the sealing member to deform into greater compliance with the two surfaces. However, should pressure reverse and approach the seal from the opposite direction the seal will distort into the area of greater space thereby causing the seal to break contact with one of the surfaces and for such pressure to vent past the seal.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 13, 1989
Date of Patent: July 9, 1991
    Assignee: Baker Hughes Incorporated
Inventors: K. Darrel Chelette, Charles A. Bollfrass

  • Patent number: 4705307
Abstract: An improvement to the sealing ring of U.S. Pat. No. 4,085,951 is disclosed, wherein the sealing ring is of a special design including an in situ sealing flange generating corner, and the stepped thread pin and box members have been modified in the shoulder areas between the thread sections thereof to provide a pressure transmitting area for transmitting torque to the ring, and to provide room for the in situ sealing flange to form and extend beyond the faces of the improved ring. With the improved design, the sealing ring is capable of retaining hot gases or liquids with a pressure differential in at least a given direction across the sealed joint exceeding the yield pressure of the rubber or plastic of which the ring is made.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: November 10, 1987

  • Patent number: 4662659
Abstract: A joint and male and female tubular elements are disclosed where the threads of the female and male members have negative load flanks and have two or more radial steps axially separated one from another by a reverse angle torque shoulder having one or two adjacent conical sealing surfaces. The reverse angle torque shoulder serves as a positive assembly stop. The negative load flank angle of the threads and the reverse torque shoulder angle combine to interlock the male and female members and to prevent differential radial separation of the conical sealing surfaces when the joint is exposed to internal pressure, external pressure or both. Tapered threads and sealing surfaces and interference threads may advantageously be used in joint construction.

  • Patent number: 4570982
Abstract: A joint of male and female tubular elements is disclosed where the threads of the female and male members have negative load flanks and have two or more radial steps axially separated one from another by a reverse angle torque shoulder having one or two adjacent conical sealing surfaces. The conical sealing surfaces develop radial positional interference and the reverse angle torque shoulder serves as a positive assembly stop. The negative load flank angle of the threads and the reverse torque shoulder angle combine to interlock the male and female members and to prevent differential radial separation of the engaged conical sealing surfaces when the joint is exposed to internal pressure, external pressure or both. Tapered threads and sealing surfaces and interference threads may advantageously be used in the joint construction.
