  • Patent number: 6013039
Abstract: A device for evaluating the patellafemoral joint is provided herein. The device measures movement of the patella in response to a lateral test force applied against the patella by a displacer, when the leg is supported in a flexed, relaxed position. The testing device includes a monitor which measures displacement of the patella. The monitor includes a monitor base that is secured to the leg of a patient and a contact arm which moves with the patella. The magnitude of the test force can be correlated with the degree of leg flexion and displacement of the patella to indicate the health and condition of the tissues in the knee which resist dislocation and movement of the patella.

  • Patent number: 5911695
Abstract: A device for testing a shoulder of a patient includes a base with a pivot arm extending therefrom. A force indicator is located at the extended end of the arm and a movement indicator is mounted on the device at its base. In order to prepare for the operation of the device, the patient is placed to effectively hold the shoulder stationary. The base of the device is then positioned on the clavicle and the force indicator is positioned on the humeral head. Preferably, the force indicator is secured to the shoulder with a strap. To test the shoulder once the device is properly positioned on the patient, a force is applied to the force indicator. This applied force is transferred directly to the humeral head and the results of its application are recorded. Specifically, the magnitude of the applied force is measured by the force indicator and the movement of the humeral head relative to the clavicle is measured by the movement indicator. The recorded measurements are then used for diagnostic purposes.

  • Patent number: 5156163
Abstract: A device for evaluating the integrity of the patella femoral joint measures movement of the patella in response to a lateral force applied against the patella of a flexed leg supported in a relaxed position. The device includes a measuring instrumentality which is positionable against the patella to measure the linear displacement of the patella in response to the lateral force. The magnitude of the applied force is correlated with the degree of leg flexion and the linear displacement of the patella to indicate the health and condition of tissues in the knee which resist dislocation of the patellofemoral joint and which promote alignment of the patella within the joint.

  • Patent number: 5116296
Abstract: The present invention is an ergometer for isometrically exercising one or more leg muscles of a patient undergoing rehabilitation of the knee joint following knee ligament surgery. The ergometer has an upper leg restraint and a lower leg restraint which are positioned on the leg above and below the knee respectively. The leg restrains are maintained in a fixed position relative to the leg by a rigid crossbar and a bolster positioned behind the knee. Exercise of the hamstring or quadriceps muscles is performed by isometrically contracting the desired muscles while the knee is at an extension angle which does not stress the ligament under repair. Muscle contraction can be artifically induced by an electrical stimulator, which in concert with a closed-loop control system, effectively regulates the exercise level.

  • Patent number: 4969471
Abstract: A device for measuring displacement of the tibia from a stationarily held patella in response to a specific anterior/posterior force applied on the tibia comprises a reference member which establishes a fixed reference line extending from the patella to a region located distally on the tibia. A measurement member has one end hingedly attached to the reference member and its other end slidingly attached to a tibia paddle which rests on the proximal region of the tibia. A rotatable yoke on the tibia paddle has one prong which rests on the lateral flare of the tibia while another prong of the yoke rests on the medial flare of the tibia.

  • Patent number: 4915374
Abstract: A recumbent exercise cycle comprises a pair of pedals and a seat which are each individually adjustable relative to a crankshaft that is rotatably mounted on the frame of the exercise cycle. In combination, each pedal is connected by an extension arm to a point on a crank arm for movement of the pedal along a circular path about the point on the crank arm, and the crank arm is connected to the crankshaft for movement of the point along a circular path about the crankshaft.
